>>149708309>Is the movie actually goodProbably, it depends on your definition of good. Frankly, it also depends on your definition of kid's movie. I don't think it's as good as any of Pixar's best, but it's pretty good in its own right. The writing is the weakest part. The jokes and the comedic timing is good, but the rest of the writing is what I'd call "functional". Not great, not terrible, but could use improvement. That's really the only thing wrong with it by my estimation. The animation is really good, the characters are fun, and it all comes together nicely.
While I think it's definitely appropriate for children, when you compare it to the more recent animated offerings it certainly feels a little more risque. Most animated kid's films have become super sanitized, so it's nice to have characters actually flirting, or characters genuinely trying to kill each other. I like that despite trying to win the day through friendship initially, violence must be used when that fails. Even though you're pretty sure you know how it's gonna end, the film does a good job of setting the stakes so there's just that little bit of uncertainty.
It's also nice to have female designs that aren't androgynous planks of wood. Ironically, probably just because the cast are anthros, there's some real body diversity in the cast. Diane has the classic female form, Kitty has a female form but is notably more muscular, and the pig girl is built like a brick shithouse. The bird just looks like a bird.
So it's a good film. Not a great film, it has some issues, but it's still pretty solid.
