PUNCHLINE
Punchline has now existed for about 6 years, meaning over half a decade, and nearing how long it took for Harley Quinn to go from her cartoon debut to a canon comic appearance. What do you think of Alexis Kaye so far?

I think she's perfectly fine. Bit of a weird transition because when she debuted DC kind took a little break from conventional Joker stories and had to spend 2 retcons worth of arcs to get rid of 3 Jokers. So things are now kinda settling down

More or less what you see. An edgy Joker fangirl with an inflated sense of self-importance. "We live in a Society"
>Why does the Joker, who doesn't like anyone, bother with this one?
In reality? Because she is effectively plot-armored against him. It's very contrived. The Joker had to like and not mistreat her (even when she completely fails to grasp where his head is at or what the point of a plan is) because if he started doing normal Joker shit and beating or casually attempting to kill her on the regular she'd goes from being not!Harley to exactly Harley 2.0.

The thing is, they've already fucked it up though in a logical way- because she has to be able to stand up against him, so she doesn't become a poor abuse victim like Harley, she also inherently stops making sense as the Joker's girlfriend. so she's already been written to have taken off on her own, and now is less of a "new Joker henchwoman" and more "Joker's also-clown-themed frenemy".

I do think it makes sense, yeah, but it means she's no longer "replacement Harley Quinn". Which to be honest I think is fine, we don't need one- but then, do we need another evil clown? The character becomes a bit reductant. Maybe if she becomes the villain of Batgirl instead or something
Anonymous No.149714742

>we had to yank Harley away from him because their relationship was "problematic
Harley was moved away from him because she was popular and charismatic and her circumstances made the shift sort of inevitable. She was pulled away form him way before girlbosslesbian, when she moved into the (comic) Suicide Squad era stuff where it was more about her being a nutter and angry at joker. She was pretty in line with the rest of the team, rather than some girlboss thing.

>Punchline is the "safe" replacement that nobody really gives a shit about but is just there to fill the gap
Yeah, in simplest terms. I imagine the idea was that with Harley having more or less become the big name female DC character, they wanted a new Joker's girl to slot into that old BTAS Harley role, because it was a very successful thing. But then it couldn't just a Harley clone, so they tried to make her """different""", less silly more angry, less "I can fix him" more "he's right!", and part of keeping the two separate was that Joker and Punchline's relationship needed to not just be a copy of Joker and Harley's, so instead he is (was? she's largely been doing her own villain shit post Joker War) affectionate towards her and weirdly tolerant, treating her without serious harm and she is more mentee turned lover than Harley's sidekick/wife vibe.

"Joker's girlfriend, except he actually likes her" is perfectly valid character concept and sells Harley in the direction they want to take her as well. You don't even need Joker to think highly of Punchline, just find her far more competent, useful, and less irritating than Harley.

What contrivance is there? There is a fundamental difference in how Harley and Punchline approach the Joker. Harley both sees herself as an equal to the Joker vis a vis the relationship and is both independent and competent enough that she rankles Joker's ego. Punchline approaches the relationship from a subordinate position and puts her competency into following the Joker's lead. Harley is a backup singer who thinks she's part of a duo, Punchline is a hype man who knows her place.

>Punchline approaches the relationship from a subordinate position and puts her competency into following the Joker's lead
This was only true of her debut, then she immediately pivoted to "I have my own following now, I don't need you anymore" She's a grifter, inspired by girltubers who adopt extreme politics to get their own followings.

Honestly, I really actually like her. The concept seemed trite, but actually keeping up with the backups, Joker comic, and her mini at the time, her use was oddly solid. Like some others said, she immediately kind of shrunk from being Harley 2.0 to her own thing, and has issues.

But the whole idea of her being a true devotee of the way people talk about Joker's philosophy (In comic and meta terms), even if he isn't always following it or doesn't quite get her, is interesting. Using that to apply a surprisingly insightful if lib-tinged depiction of social-media driven upset and extremism is even more interesting. Plus, the scenes with her being absolutely unhinged in prison were solid. In all, she fell off pretty quick, but I hope she sticks around, there's something in there to be done.

Also, solid design. Asian-American stacked Clown woman in mixed hosiery and leather/latex minidress, long boots, and vague gothery does more for me than I'd have imagined.

Isn't she? Kaye could go either way and I thought it got stated at some point, and some of the "college" art looked like it. She's at least ambiguous I guess, but point stands on the rest of the design. Dark hair works, somehow.

Punchline was ruined because they IMMEDIATELY started doing the "she's just misunderstood and empowered and it's all men's fault anyway" bullshit they always ruin female villains with. They needed to commit to the idea that she's simply irredeemable and they couldn't do that even for a full year.

Pic related. Trying to kill Batman is what got Harley thrown through a fucking 5th story window in Mad Love, along with not having respect for style and the game of it, Punchline did this same shit during Joker War and he just laughed it off. It's contrived. Joker frequently kills very competent, loyal subordinates just for the spontaneity, or because he thinks of some amusing reason to do it at the time, or because he feels like something should be a 1v1 between him and Batman.

She is protected on an authorial level.
