This was brought up in another thread earlier
>villains who are charismatic and whose comedic moments are derived from dark sense of humor rather than laughing at the villain being an inept loser
>villains who blatantly enjoy tormenting their victims and are shamelessly open about it instead of coming up with lame excuses and justifications
>genuinely threatening and dangerous
These kinds of villains seem to have evaporated completely in the recent years. Why did this happen and when are they making a comeback?

"""Writers""" decided that angsty relatable "justified" villains are inherently the best kind of villain because they completely misunderstood that writing workshop about the most interesting villains and think that any hackfraud who makes a villain "who makes more sense than the hero" = peak 10/10 and while a pure senseless evil villain is always = 0/10 no matter how fucking badly written the "realistic" villain is

Top Dollar from The Crow (movie) is the best example. This guy could have played any of those type of villains, could have been an Osborn or Joker.

It's also one way the movie improves upon the comic, he's really not noteworthy at all in the comic, just the leader of the criminals. He's entertaining as hell in the movie

Industry is infested with self-pitying narcissists who self-insert as the villains. It's the same reason Doomwank became a thing.

Are these two things mutually exclusive? In the real world, a lot of people enjoy causing their enemies suffering, but they still have a justification for why their enemies deserve it, even a lame one.

You are describing the Joker who people never stop bitching about

I've seen a couple of them in Chinese cartoons. Some examples are pic related and the Mouse Doctor.

Honestly, the Joker's issue is not the concept, it's the execution.
People like Joker when he's well-written and isn't
Nobody was bitching about him in Arkham Asylum game because he was cool there. It's when writers started putting other villains down to wank him more is when people started talking shit. And he tends to get obnoxiously edgy at times becaus everybody wants to top The Killing Joke in terms of being "dark mature Joker story" without understanding why it was mature.

The problem is they tried to make Joker into Carnage or Anarky over the years, and he's not supposed to be

>Anarky
More like they tried to make Anarky into Ledger Joker lite. Anarky is supposed to be an anti-hero criticizing this kind of "let's blow it all up" anarchist retard modern Anarky is.

Alan Grant created Anarky to espouse whatever philosophy he believed in at the moment.

There are still some villains who are just plain evil.
>Ego from GOTG2
>Lex Luthor from Gunn's Superman

This is probably why people like Death from The Last Wish so much.

Zurg from the Buzz Lightyear cartoon. Zurg was only a "loser" when Buzz was involved, every other plan he did was successful and if Buzz was not around, everybody would be toast.

Well, of course when time came to adapt this character to a new movie, Disney decided to make him gay future Buzz who's not cool.

I liked Prometheus on Arrow. Most of his screentime is being a smug bastard mocking everybody around him, trying to psychologically break Green Arrow and killing people
He does have his excuses, but at the very least it's very clear they're less "this villain has a point" variety and more of "this guy is fucking mental".
>"you can't use your father's memory to justify a killing spree"
>murders dozens of innocents who had nothing to do with his father pretty much to fuck with Green Arrow who did kill his father
>kills his own wife and then has the gall to blame Green Arrow for it and seemingly actually believe in it
>when he loses, commits suicide killing his own loyal followers via dead man switch explosives just because he was hoping Green Arrow's allies would die as well
>the father he's supposedly avenging wanted to disown him because even he thought his son was fucking insane
