Because Rick’s backstory as a badass galactic rebel was spread out between decades of his life and we see how damaged he is as a person after all of it, whereas Space Beth as a concept is a bored suburban mom deciding to defeat Emperor Palpatine on a whim. And we as an audience are just supposed to swallow the premise of becoming Master Chief after 3 months of “finding yourself.”
Space Beth is the exact kind of eye-roll inducing, irritating writer self-indulging cliché that shows like this are supposed to make fun of—but it’s played 100% straight.
Jerry works because he’s still portrayed as a normal shlub who’s out of his depth when he’s on an adventure.
