The closest thing we have to a genuine mahou shoujo story right now is Absolute Wonder Woman, despite the """"edgy"""" trappings of a skeletal pegasus and Guts-knockoff prosthetic arm it's very much a hopeful and romantic story, and plenty of magical girl media has done the same with edgy aesthetics but a hopeful and optimistic tone

Someone else said it: Comic book writers have such terrible experiences with love that it's physically impossible for most of them to imagine a compelling romance.

One of the best comic book romances I remember was between Lucifer Morningstar, the actual DEVIL of DC, and Mazikeen. An actual spawn of Lilith. It still ended with her slashing him in the face (as far as I'm concerned the sequel series and the reboot can be ignored) but up until that point it was legitimately a healthier relationship than every capeshitter one I can think of. Which is frankly astonishing given the power imbalance between the characters.

Also Sinestro and Lyssa Drak are a better representation of love than the Star Sapphires were in their heyday, despite also fully embracing being supervillains.
