Insane that Sanders got away with making Lilo & Stitch in general. A wholly original Disney film in a contemporary setting with native Hawaiian leads? That was unheard of at the time, and I'm glad they took a chance on his vision.

They need that experimental approach again with their animated features. Wish was like the Anti-L&S; it was about as generic and by-the-numbers as you can get, which would explain why audiences weren't interested.

Disney had already made contemporary films. Lady and the Tramp, and 101 Dalmatians were contemporary to when they were created, and also stuff like Toy Story existed in the 90's.

Pixar has definitely been working with more creative freedom since it first started, so I'm more focusing on WDAS in particular. But you are right about those other two being contemporary works, even if one was adapted from a popular novel.

look at Bubbles' body language, he trying to keep his distance from her. Almost like he's wants to touch her but he'd lose his job if he did

God bless Sanders for making a Disney movie with anatomically correct sexy women. If I ever meet that man I'm giving him a handshake.

They ever marketed it as the anti-Disney Disney movie. At the parks, it is definitely the character for people who hate Disney characters. What's truly amazing is after it stood the rest of time that Disney never tried a cartoon like this ever again.

The fact alone that Disney was willing to not only make fun of itself was something to be commended. Then there's the marketing where they had not just posters with Stitch bugging past Disney characters, but went to the effort of reanimating many iconic scenes just to insert Stitch into them was definitely one of the most incredible marketing feats ever. Shame they didn't even do half of that for the remake, though there's just way too much to criticize about that shitfest as it is.
>>149747082 >native Hawaiian leads?
Everyone at Disney had to learn to draw Asian faces at the time. Might as well make use of it [Pocahontas' Indians, Mulan's Chinese, Emepror's Inca*, Lilo's Hawaiians, Bear's Inuits].
*They didn't draw them as Asian, but it probably flew around as an idea before they fully realised the direction of the movie.

Being able to see Lilo and Stitch and Atlantis in theaters was truly special as a kid. I feel sorry for kids right now.

Very much so. It marks the shift in Stitch's arc where he finally experiences 'Ohana. Easily one of the most masterfully executed scenes in Disney animation; everything falls into place beautifully: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTFgdtfOcuc

i really wanna like lilo and stitch but i never got over how much of a cunt lilo was to nani. I understand her parents died, but lilo is doing everything in her power to get taken away by the state. It's like watching a movie about the retarded disturbed kid in a special ed class, its uncomfortable to watch and i wanna beat the shit out of them to get them to stop screaming so loud.
