What was the point of this? When it happened it just seemed like a desperate attempt from Marvel comics writers to stay relevant.

The idea was to permanently demonize Steve so Sam would be the main Captain America going forward while Steve gets branded a filthy nazi no better than Red Skull. His MCU popularity at the time meant this blew up way beyond regular comic circles and Marvel changed course.
