The only thing I can think of is he purposely derailed it because he got too nervous to write any of the other characters as horny anymore and wanted to use Ashley as a way of making it seem "empowering" or something and because the idea of having a Japanese Schoolgirl be the outlet for his fetish fantasies and comments was too irresistible at the time. The fact that he's done literally nothing with her across 10 years of comics seems to support this (Kevin doesn't count, that's basically "Well that didn't happen 20" at this point. "

I don't think a single rental place actually ever tried something like this. Probably because, by the time it became a big thing everybody had swapped to Netflix. Heck, thinking it over Netflix opening up the larger hoi polloi to previously hard to find movies may have been what allowed such video reviews to exist.

Well there's a couple of things there, but it basically boils down to so you can both have a better time. Like one time my friend wanted to be kidnapped and forcibly dragged into a room where there was an Eyes Wide Shut esque ritual going on and be tied to a table and tortured for two hours. Obviously requesting that might have dampened the surprise somewhat but we were still able to have a friend who wasn't supposed to be "in on it" distract her while another friend snuck up behind her, grabbed her, then dragged her in a room where myself and two others had set the scene up with props. Yes she technically knew what was coming in advance but about 2-3 minutes into it that didn't matter anymore and she was having a blast and got her fantasy fulfilled.

Even when I bottom, it's like, yeah it would be cool if they just spontaneously did everything I like but I'd rather just tell them before I get in the zone and know it's going to happen then wish it would and never get it.

Also, for hair pulling while it's super tame it's better to just tell him and have him look up how to do it safely because I met a girl once who's ex yanked her hair wrong (grabbed it at the tips and jerked instead of by the base and just flexing their control) and it pinched a nerve in her neck and gave her lifelong nerve pain so its not like there aren't technical benefits to having a game plan either.

The whale says things "that small" shouldn't work. Belts are much bigger than watches, so maybe that made the difference? Or maybe it had more alien TF gun tech in it. Elliot might have been somehow powering it with his own energy, but I'm not sure how that would have worked.

1 the belt is bigger and can store more magic,
2 Ambient magic is everywhere even if less then around the town.

You are totally right.
What Dan messed up, is that characters like that solve their issues IN THE END of the story. His problem is doing character development in the middle, which ends up stripping away the personality of all of them in exchange for just "vaguely nice with each other".

To not mention that, flaws are good things, characters become more interesting with flaws.

Yeah the relationships basically did not change. Save for Sarah, and Elliot deteriorating. Which I largely put down to Elliot's personality being neutered. The guy that was willing to make out while a girl, with guy mode Sarah. Is not the kind of person that needs to mind control themselves to relax. Stick a fork in them Elliot as we knew him is gone.
>>149772990

The 6 month timeskip, also really showcases how bad the cast is at taking initiative. They just learn about magic in the area being way to high. And they basically did nothing for 6 months about that. They at most asked Tedd's dad. But did they ask Raven nope, go on a hunt for magical knowledge to figure out why. Hell they did not even just look around online for information.

Yeah. To Dan's credit he explains some things that really infer things about Lord Tedd even though he hasn't really shown up yet.

Like I assume his backstory is going to be something about not having many friends except Niolo and Shade Tail eventually/ Other World Ellen dies and he goes on some crazy revenge quest/mission to change the world for the better and then discovers his Seer powers and is able to reverse engineer a bunch of magic to power up Shade Tail with various transformations, turning them into a one man army so they can conquer the world/Galaxy/Omniverse.

I agree. While it was a fun joke it would've been much better to squeeze it some cozy SoL, ship tease Elliot/Susan and Sarah/Grace/Tedd, and then eventually pivot into some kind of adventure. Possibly something that has to do with Nanase that leads the whole gang to have go on a road trip and investigate then fight something. This is just my own personal preference, but something where they go deep into a forest and maybe have to deal with some weird Firewatch guy that's like Dex would've been neat. Or maybe running into actual Bigfoot since EGS is kind of a Fantasy Kitchen Sink.

If nothing else, Dan passing up the opportunity for a gender bender beach episode is criminal.

Also the sinkhole of believing character development means just becoming a stereotypical Christian Youth (not that I'm complaining about that) but it was possible to give them character growth while maintaining their personalities. Like: just the characters who previously butted heads becoming friends and learning to appreciate each other's quirks in an endearing and friendly manner is character development, Ellen learning how to be a girl and a sister, Elliot learning how to have a sister and a relationship, getting out of his comfort zone with the movie stuff, his attempt at a relationship with Sarah followed by devekoping one with Susan, these are all interesting things that they wouldnt have done at the start of the series before they started dealing with magic stuff and going on adventures together.

It's because they waited until they were gone to gimp their catalog. If one opened up nowadays and offered a more versatile catalog then what's available on most streaming platforms (especially given that a lot of the complaints are just not being able to find some random old show or movie and the DVDs not always being easily available) it might really carve out a nice niche for itself.

Especially if it doubled as a card, comic, anime/manga shop.

Continuing on the rewrite saga

After Abraham almost casual defeat of the entire cast. I would then have it be, noted by the MC's that they where preforming way above their ablities during the fight, and have everybody but Grace burnt out after it, thou only Nanase being burnt out for more then a week.

Cut to Pandora reveling that even their poor showing against Abraham, was with her boosting everyone's magic, from the start to the end of the entire fight. Since in this story Abraham opened with the mass sleep spell. And they only managed to resist it thanks to Pandora buffing them.

The next bit Hammerchlorians is basically useless in my opinion. And needs to be cut out entirely. Jerry wounds up as just another safety net to prevent anything bad happening. I can see complaints from Susan and Nanase while being burned out leading to them talking about the Paris trip. You could then have Susan's awakening culminate form the end of that discussion. And the discovery of her ablity to summon Fairy Dolls.

I think rewriting is pointless. It streamlines events, which cuts down on the character members, which is how you end up having a cast of three. Have you watched many tv shows that have a shrinking budget and cast? It's weird. What needs to be done is not complaining about the past comics, but making the changes you want to see in the present day. If you want Character to do X, then don't have her do X then, figure out how to do X now. Yes, Dan could have handled everything better.

>>149778861
omg's you're right. They ended a summer arc with a timeskip to Ted in a parka. No bikinis, no Grace sunbathing on the roof. No Grace getting ticketing for sunbathing nude, and Mr Verres having to deal with the paperwork. The comic's not in winter now, so you can do that anytime, Dan!

The reddit fandom keeps shouting "more cute" because they have to follow rules or be banned because R is full of trans cultists who ban people for being nontrans or desiring "assigned gender roles". The twitter fandom keeps shouting "more gay".

So yeah, everyone but Dan is shouting different things that would all get delivered by enough sex, not even restricting it to Elliot.

I can sympathize with Dan's position somewhat cause I can imagine he does have a lot of fans who keep telling him to throw in more gay or trans shit. I'm not against more gay or transgender shenanigans, though I don't particularly care for either Luke or Sam. They're fucking boring, Luke doesn't show any other sides of Justin and Sam's inclusion feels redundant. Elliot and Tedd could be cute together and Grace was even established to be into it, but that seems to be a big old tease cause that plot point has been building up for years with no payoff.

And I can respect his decision to keep the comic sexless, but I think the early comics nailed a better balance between sexiness, silliness and seriousness. I personally enjoy the magic autism cause it's well thought out and gives the setting some believably, but even I'm getting tired of the slow pacing and constant explanations.

But imo the biggest sin of it is messing up the Elliot and Susan ship, because they had a really good chemistry going on, the comic hasn't quite recovered from this fallout yet.

I think they were obviously going to be twins and Susan was going to be adopted. An easy explanation for why she never knew is that she was adopted because her mother was infertile, with it being a huge factor in the marriage falling apart. They were also almost surely going to be both Raven daughters. The current explanation makes very little sense.

I have honestly no idea for why someone would bitch about them being twins, so I think I am going with Dan wanting to subvert expectations. Sure as fuck it was not intended from the beginning. Things like the date of birth being a few minutes apart and them being basically clones with the only difference being something explainable by the awakening are too specific to simply be red herrings, even more because the current explanation just handwaves them as coincidences.

Deep EGS lore dump

Originally Susan, Diane had nothing to do with each other. It was just a case of Dan's art style making 2 characters that looked close to each other. Something that had already happened twice already with 4 of the main characters.

Fans pointed out that Susan and Diane had near identical features, once you factor in Susan dying her hair. Once Dan decided to incorporate their similarity into the story. This lead to the terrible decision in my opinion to change Susan design. Ruining the twin aspect and preventing a cool fusion in the future. The thing that made it cool was that they where identical, while having both very similar, and different personalities. Diane an extrovert, Susan's an introvert, etc etc.
>>149650931

Pretty sure at first they where going to be twins adopted by different families. But that would have meant exploring the divorce story, something Dan even in his edgiest phase did not have the stones to do. Once Dan realized he was to much of a coward to deal with the divorce, he started splitting them further and further apart. You will see his thought process pushing the gap between them wider and wider as we go forward. Reminder the occurs over several years, and each time it brought up is another widening of the gap.

This then leads them to the beyond terrible decision to tie them together by way of Raven, the worst character in the comic.

By your own words Edward their is nothing special about Not Tengu. So doing anything but killing him is beyond stupid. People get spells based upon what they want in the EGS magic system. Even if you put him in prison, he will eventually get a spell that allows him to escape. So unless your willing to lobotomize him, all putting him in jail does, is a big fat nothing.

By the very nature of the magic in EGS, you basically have to adopt a policy of killing everyone that misuses magic. If someone gets a spell that allows them to abuse, manipulate, or harm people, and they use it. Not only does that validate it to themselves that it is ok to use magic like that, it also starts them on the path to gaining more powerful magic to bring harm unto others.

It a bit like Dresden Files magic, where using dark magic makes you more and more likely to use dark magic, until you cannot not use dark magic.

They would still have their magic, and spells they already had, and it pretty darn easy to cast spells in egs. You can cast spells entirely unconscious even, just by thinking about something completely unrelated to magic hard enough.
>>149792298
And who would have spells for locking people up. People who like locking people up. Do you see a slight problem their. Even if you did have guard that can lock up a magic user. By their very nature they themselves will eventually become a problem, you have to kill. And now you have nobody powering the magic, so all the prisoners escape.

Brevity is the soul of wit. I think the issue is not that he over explains but that he does it in a very long and decompressed way and then goes around explaining it again. Part of it is the curse of the medium with something like web comics it might be months between the setup and pay off of a story so new readers need to be reminded of stuff that happened.

On the other hand, we don't need a year worth of the characters just living their every day lives before the plot catch to them, Take the Wotch as an example by this point they had a dozen of adventures in that comic and had developed the characters as well, I think you could take this comic, remove or re-cut half of the pages and you get a much better comic just by cutting out the fat.

Thinking about it I find the governments roll in EGS to be really out of place, and badly handled.

If they are a governmental origination even the smallest branch would have several thousand members. Easily able to handle minor threats like Diamen, just from raw numbers alone. Yet somehow a group of school age kids have more active magical members in a, single town then the government seems to have in the entire country.

On top of them having so much tech, and what not from the aliens. They would basically make them gods, able to influence and control thing on a massive scale.

Everything after that, is done without a proper thou-line story keeping the pace, and events on track. Which allows Dan's worst writing habits to come out and envelop the story. Everybody suffers from a massive personality shift out of nowhere.
