Is Eric Cartman the best self insert? Given that Cartman = Trey, it makes sense that Cartman would have these positive qualities. If he weren't a villain protagonist who has to lose for the sake of either plot or a joke, then he would be a Mary Sue. Disregarding the non-canon Special, I have always theorized that Cartman's end game is to make the in-universe equivalent of South Park, an offensive show that's meant to piss off everyone. Cartman had just learned that he can monetize his offensive antics instead of having to appeal to anyone's personal beliefs, and if he learns that he can expand his hate-base by flipflopping and making fun of the other side then Cartman's transformation into becoming Trey Parker would be complete. But who will be his Matt Stone? My guesses are

Mostly because his philosophy is "all of it is ok or none of it is," and if Cartman were to be an equal oppurtunist with who he offends, then it'll appeal to Kyle's philosophy and could win him over. Furthermore, Kyle's friendship with Stan isn't that great which is why Kyle and Stan being Matt and Trey is a red herring.
