Why is all of western media so terrified of portraying white men as cool and competent heroes and women as anything but all-powerful, white men hating girlbosses?
I don't know a single action show or movie from the last 10 years that has a white male hero who is written like your average modern female protagonist.
While female protagonist are always super tough girlbosses white male characters are either gay or weak, effeminate losers and idiots who spend the entire story getting humiliated and rescued or beaten up by girlboss "side characters"

It's less that the Japanese anime MCs are pussies and more that the Japanese work hours and meikyu companies have caused an unhealthy level obsession with cuteness and youth.
The further back you go the more sorta seasoned adult male badasses you have, the cuteness obsession ramps up in the mid-1990s and it all sorta hits a slope from there. Every new MC is some breed of teenage boy even in anime meant for adults as a means of "recapturing youth."
You see it with the female characters too. As you head into the 2000s they all become significantly tropier with every last one of them being some breed of ___-dere as the basis of their character. Their designs get significantly more moe. Everything must be cuter. A lot of stuff related to anime makes more sense when you learn about kawaii culture. The cultural obsession borders on a fetishization of cuteness. The characters have to be cute, the cool stuff has to be cute, the funny stuff has to be cute, the sexy stuff has to be cute, even a lot of the threatening stuff has to be cute.
So you can get like this warlord MC slashing and shooting people up as he charges through the enemy in the most masculine way possible and he's a 5'3 teenage boy with a bob because there has to be room for him to be kawaii at times.

The original manga predates the mid 90s boom and even then, when you look at the Dragon Ball characters, a lot of them were meant to check off the kawaii box. The kawaii culture was always there but ramped up more and more as time went on.
The best example is JJBA part 4 which was coming out just as the big shift was happening and you see the art style change in real time to match.

People are tired.
Smething important of note is that kawaii culture largely started with stuff like cat cafes or little mascot characters.
So these things are like a little escape for all the people walking home tired from long work hours yet it starts proving more and more ridiculously popular for the youth.
Oh and that big economic bid they were making which would have put them on top of the world? America just rigged the game and swatted it down like a fly in the early 90s and left those youths more uncertain as to their future.
Kawaii culture was a stress response after WWII. In surrounding themselves with cute stuff, they'd think to joy, calm, innocence. The more stressful life got, the more it took off.
America, whether we like to admit it or not, had it pretty fucking easy until 3 recessions in a row combo'd us into the corner of the ring and you're now seeing a similar 'cute' obsession start to develop here.

Happens with non white males too. Spiderverse Miles Morales and Bow from She Ra are borderline femboys based on how little masculinity they display. They may get the girl in the end, but that's just due to generic happy ending writing. Puss in Boots got this treatment in the Last Wish as well if you want to call him a Latino variant, and if that's too much a stretch, you got Marco from Star Vs. who's basically Bow except Latino.

Can't really think of any Asian male MCs who get this treatment off the top of my head interestingly, but I'm sure anime has you covered on that front.
