What the fuck did I just watch?
I know it's been over a month since KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix and there's been numerous threads posted on /co/ during that time, but I just watched it today since it's been Netflix's #1 movie for weeks now. So what's the appeal?
>KPop girl band fights demons.
Meh, both overused tropes.
>This has been going on for centuries and is why there's always been a girl pop group with the job throughout the ages.
Ok, cool.
>The lead singer is half-demon.
Now you have my attention. Fun source for drama.
>Her mother is brought up like three times but we never see her and there's absolutely no mention of the father.
Why?
>Rumi's demon half gives her a skin pattern and can sing powerfully.
That's it?
>It's supposed to be a coming-out allegory?
Again? We're all bored of this story and it doesn't really work since it's something she inherited.

The music was good and I loved the costuming, but what else is there? Are the performances the only reason why this movie is popular?

There needed to be more about the demons. Rumi being half-demon didn't actually amount to anything.

>Are the performances the only reason why this movie is popular?
Well, it hit the switches for several popular things: Magical girls, k-pop, disney-esque humor, girl bands, boy bands... it's no wonder it was a huge success.

I feel kinda put off by most of that stuff, and I know I am not the target audience, so I really don't care much about the show.

>both overused tropes.
Nothing is original, who cares, etc. But if you're tired of it I understand.
>Why?
We could have used more of the mother, and the father, I guess they didn't have time or something.
>That's it?
Yeah. We all have demon voice in us and if we listen we become demon and do bad stuff. The plot is simple, not explained in detail, and I'd say it's the second weakest aspect of the film. The first being the demon king, he's boring, he looks dumb, fucking bonfire with googly eyes. The demon boy band saved the film, but we don't get much detail from the other singers then the main guy. Oh well.
>It's supposed to be a coming-out allegory?
It's a mixed bag, it's about not hiding your flaws, self acceptance, change, being honest, redemption. Very simple and surface level though.
>and it doesn't really work since it's something she inherited.
Bait.
>why this movie is popular?
You seemed to like the likable parts. Number one the music, number two the animation and character designs, and number three the personalities and humor. That's it. That's all it has to be. It's a weak movie with very strong redeeming qualities. It's not that complicated.

it's focused yet using tropes
it's not the ideas but the EXECUTION

It's hilarious that people don't get it.
It's an extremely basic story executed well.
It's not complicated, it's not subversive, it's not trying to do anything except tell the simplest possible story in the most tried and true way.

Well executed mediocrity is king when everyone else is miles up their own ass trying to be unique and original or so cheap that it's painful.

There is nothing else unless it gets expanded in a sequel. This movie was for the Kpop stans and they only want 2 things. They want cute Korean girls and metrosexual Korean boys.

The movie reminds people of a better era when animated movies were simple fun instead of the collection of shoehorned messages. Yes it is not some top of the line classic, yes it is aimed at ten years old girls and womanchildren but still very entertaining.
Remember this was sent out to die by Sony so despite the animation studio behind it it was probably never meant to be some tentpole release.

>Why?
Because Rumi's father was a demon and her mother was forced to kill him, dingus.

>That's it?
The demon scars aren't a fucking superpower. They're a representation of the gradual loss of your humanity until you fully become a demon.

>Again?
Where are you getting your information? There's nothing in the story at all to imply it's a "coming out" allegory. For fuck's sake, Rumi spends almost the entire film chasing Jinu's dick and in the end it's the Power of Heterosexual Love that allows him to reclaim his humanity and save Rumi.

>Are the performances the only reason why this movie is popular?
It's popular because most of the audience isn't as dim as you seem to be.

Gave it a watch out of sheer boredom this weekend because a friend spoke highly of it and recommended it to me. Was dead silent the whole hour and a half. It managed to evoke zero emotion from me the entire time I was watching. Save for when the heroine and the demon guy started floating in the sky singing about being β€œfree” and shit. I had to hold back a couple of keks at that part. I hate k-pop tho so the bar was always going to be for getting me to enjoy it.

I mean the "Demon God" directly copies the cadance of the Burning Bush from Prince Of Egypt, so that's hard to miss - but South Korea is the most dysfunctional, feminized, West-style degenerate country in East Asia, and it's also the most Christian. That's on you.
