>He's just one samurai!
>He cant take us all on!
and then like three horses die while Usagi kills all the bandits. And I love it every time.

I don't think I can ever give this book a chance because I just can't get past a story where the main character is supposed to be a rabbit furry tough-guy.

Usagi feels like the one comic /co/ could actually recommend and people WILL read the damn thing

I think a big part is how "honest" all characters feel.

Yeah. The comic doesn't idealize anyone. I think it's cool how even though Usagi is a likeable character, he fully subscribes to his culture's fucked-up values. There's a scene where an ex-samurai is describing his failure to save his lord's son, so he asks his own son to kill himself to retain their honor, which the son immediately does. Usagi fully approves of this choice, even as he sympathizes with the man. That's authentic writing.

>love Usagi
>enjoy yearly /co/ storytimes
>can't talk about it anywhere else because copious turtle dick

I get the logic behind "I wanna gay ship the turtles but not with each other because that would be incest" but so help me it ruins Usagi discussions everywhere else.

When you say it like that it feels Usagi's existence is treated more as a shipping compromise rather than his own character with his own stories

That's exactly the issue, some people only know him from the TMNT crossovers when he's more interesting than them anyway.

Reminds me of how the vast majority of people these days only know Madman because he killed Omni-Mark in Invincible War in the comics

Welcome to Mr. Sakai's Animal People Feudal Japan Wild Ride. Don't get fooled by the whimsy and please remember that we only live to suffer.
It's a good moment to put March 16th in your calendar, that's when our 9th traditional yearly Usagi storytime starts. Reading the comic together and discussing it "live" is a blast and you'll be surprised how many details we keep discovering.

Usagi is not a stereotypical tough guy. While his samurai pride sometimes takes over (especially early in the story or when he meets an absolute asshole), in reality he's a kind hearted goofball who's extremely competent with a sword and lives in times of great strife, so he has to use it often.
