Sunday Funnies 8/10/2025
Good morning, grandpa. It's a beautiful day for the beach, so hurry up and read the comics so we can get the heck out of here.

Hmm? No, you have to read the newspaper first. It's part of our bit.

Glad to be back after taking the week off for the moving process. It was somewhat difficult going from Florida all the way to Texas (took 3 days), but I'm back in a new home.

By the way, some anon leaked a planned Popeye cartoon series that was pitched in 1998 called "Popeye Untold". It was a bit bizarre and felt more like a parody you see on MAD TV than anything the franchise had done, but it's more on par with the current Randy Mullohand run in terms of how self-aware it is. I don't have the YouTube link for the upload there, but I do have the Desuarchive link for the thread when it was released, containing two Catbox links for the two episodes that were produced (they were giving high hopes for a full greenlight that they produced another episode). https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/149751276/

Popeye is no stranger to cancelled projects *cough* Genndy Tartakovsky animated movie *cough*, but it is a change of pace for the sailor that was considered in a time when legacy characters received new content.

It's because the burglar is really a thief with a heart of gold, and his only objective right now is the reclamation of his family's fortune. He opened the safe, but as the heirlooms weren't in there, he concluded that his source had misdirected him, likely to create a diversion so he could look for the lost fortune himself. Betrayed, and with no time to lose, the burglar closed the safe again and immediately left.

Man I don't know how they expect kids to figure this stuff out.

Most livestock suck as pets though. Most ungulates are herd animals and so you need to keep at least two to keep them happy and healthy which is naturally a huge barrier to keeping one around for companionship since they tend to be huge and shit everywhere, although there’s always exceptions of course (except sheep, I’ve never seen or heard of a sheep that’s fine spending it’s days by itself). Farm fowl like chicken and ducks are better at being single pets and make GREAT pest control (especially ducks who will genocide any and all mosquitoes near them before they become a problem) but they’re either too smart or stupid for their own good with absolutely no in between. Also roosters crow whenever they feel like, not just in the morning which is a bigger deal than you’d think. I’m not saying don’t do it, I had a pet rooster I kept alive for 6 years when I was a kid and he was great and I knew a guy with a goat he adored (and used to lend my family so we didn’t have to mow the lawn), I’m just saying it’s an VERY different experience then having a normal house pet like a dogs, cats, fish, or whatever.

the crossovers made me go and read Molly and the Bear archives on GoComics and while I love the art and some of the arcs were great (Molly's dad Dean getting jealous of Bear because her mom pampered him, Molly's grandma being a serial botox abuser ) I was underwhelmed by just how many reruns/recycled strips there were.

Guess that's why they advertise the book collections now

The creator did an interview saying that the reason they went into graphic novels was because he was doing the strip for GoComics since 2009 and barely any attention was being given to the comic and thought Kidlit was a good avenue to reach more readers. Not only that but they work in the animation industry and worked for Jim Davis so they didn't have a lot of time to make new comics. The books and the Rosebuds crossover are probably the most attention the comic has gotten in its nearly 20-year run.

Yeah I know he's been an animator for like the past 30 years (also worked for Disney IIRC) so I figured that it being a side pursuit also factored in with the amount of reruns.

And he's not wrong on the kidlit avenue, it worked for Big Nate and Phoebe and unlike other old comics it's pretty easy to repackage them into graphic novels

Ehhhh, yes and no. The basic concept of Popeye, a rough n’ tumble sailor man who mumbles and has forearms the size of his head, is public domain HOWEVER there’s still some elements like him getting super strong from eating spinach (he didn’t do that until 1931, two years after his debut) that are still under copyright… but that’s probably not the reason for the copyright notice. That’s most likely there because Mutts is ALSO distributed by King‘s Features Syndicate

The International Criminal Court issued his arrest warrant last year, which means more than 100 countries are obligated by treaty to arrest him upon arrival. Obviously, this is toothless; Israel isn't a party to the ICC, and he can simply avoid entering any nation willing to arrest him. A few parties have even promised not to enforce the warrant if he's visiting for official business. Objectively, he's a wanted man and his position is the only thing allowing him to pass through larges swaths of the world.
