It's an art film that eschews a lot of traditional storytelling. There aren't any fap-bait characters, the narrative doesn't really drive towards an exciting conclusion or a dramatic twist - there's a loose theme of confronting capitalist ideals vs personal fulfillment, but that isn't really pushed in any meaningful way. It crops up every now and then, but it's just sort of a theme that exists. It isn't really explored beyond a superficial degree. The art style is rudimentary, and the animation is limited. The acting is fairly deadpan and the pacing is slow and awkward. The main character is a teen kind of struggling with his place in the world, but not so much that it's hyper dramatic or emotional.
The film feels like the embodiment of vaporwave. It's dreamy and slow and both banal in it's slice of life aspects while at the same time being kind of bizarre. The whole thing feels both nostalgic and kind of weird. This film will likely piss off people looking for instant gratification, but it's the sort of thing that dug into my head and hasn't stopped bothering me since I watched it. The entire film felt like something I was remembering from being really high one time in the past. In that way, it kind of reminded me of TADC, though far less in your face and gag-driven and much MUCH slower.
Overall, the film is slow and kind of dreamy. Without trying to prop it up with the comparison, it felt a touch Lynchian in the way that it challenges you to confront and question it. There were many times I wondered if something was an artistic choice or if it was due to inexperience. I think the audience not being sure works in its favor.
I really want to talk about this film with people who have seen it.
