Materialists isn’t a flop, it made it’s budget back and is turning a profit. Not every movie is a billion-dollar blockbuster, most skate by well under a hundred million. Tentpole movies are big gambles, so they need to pay off big or the studio loses out. You could literally make 10 “Materialists” for the budget of one “Fantastic Four.”
Eddington was a dreary depressing Western made by the Hereditary guy with zero advertising. Westerns appeal to angry boomers who can’t stomach the miserable depressing shit Ari Aster makes, and post-ironic millennial hipsters, who only watch whatever shit Youtube tells them to (hence the advertising problem).
Julia Garner was in Weapons, Fantastic 4 and Wolfman this year. Nobody is blaming Fantastic 4 or Wolfman on her because Weapons is popular. Movie stars don’t matter like they used to.
20 years ago, EVERYONE went out to see a Tom Cruise movie BECAUSE it had Tom Cruise. Now, the number of people who will see a movie because it has a certain star, just isn’t as big. People are more concerned with directors, if anything. All the talk around Superman was that it was the new James Gunn joint. It was the big new thing from Mr. Slither, who turned out a half-dozen bangers in the past decade, so everyone and their dog went to watch it twice despite the ONLY known actor being Nicolas fucking Hoult.
Whose name I probably spelled wrong because who the fuck is Nicholas Holt.
Actors don’t matter. Nobody fucking cares about actors.
