There was an alarmist anon last year who claimed to be an insider saying that John was gravely ill and probably wouldn't make it much longer. That seemed to coincide with a post he'd earlier made on Patreon about how he was sorry for not posting for a bit but he was recovering from an illness. Then his Patreon (as well as any other internet activity from him) went radio silent for several months which was unusual for him since he'd been posting almost weekly until that point.
He later made another post saying that there were complications, but he was on the mend before going radio silent for longer.

i think this might be my problem with it actually. for a long time i've had trouble articulating to people how i can love Ren & Stimpy but not enjoy new Spongebob, and I think this may hit the nail on the head. It looks great but substantially it's just the same brainrot as everything else. Like, Ren & Stimpy had more than just the art style going for it. APC didn't work out that well even though it carried the same artistic merit. But dare I say I might find even APC more enjoyable to sit through than most nu-Bob episodes. I don't really agree with that. I know he used some old storyboard ideas and all, but don't think it was his original vision for Ren & Stimpy even if he said it that way while promoting it.

Technically, his original idea for Ren & Stimpy was Your Gang, a variety show where Ren & Stimpy were the pets of the kids.

And this reboot doesn't capture the same feeling either. Ren & Stimpy, if I had to describe what I think John was actually originally envisioning, was meant to be the ultimate kids cartoon, a fun event.
