Reading a story and watching it animated are two completely different experiences.
If I really like a story, sometimes I'll just reread cause it's that good.
I want to see my favorite characters accurately adapted because adaptations like these are what form public perception (just look at how the Super Friends, Teen Titans, and Justice League cartoons have influenced how people see these characters) and I want general audiences to be familiar with the actual version of the characters, not some Elseworld AU version that acts completely different and exists in a very different setting.

Because comics aren't a singular narrative the way manga is. You can adapt Maison Ikkoku from chapter 1 to the end. You can not do that with Green Lantern. There's too much content and every writer puts their own spin and personality onto the character which makes it inconsistent. Can you imagine watching a Kyle Rayner show that goes from Marz run to Winnick's? It would be so jarring and awkward. If you went straight through the character's history you'd eventually get to Omega Men where Kyle is depicted as if he grew up in a Mexican household even though Winnick clearly sets up that he didn't. It'd be awful. Straight adaptations are good for specific stories, but wide sweeping television and animated shows are better off being original.

Well go read some indie comics for that. Even then, a lot of manga aren't even adapted 1:1. You have loads of shows like Blue Exorcists, FMA, and Soul Eater that create original endings instead of keeping things open for a season 2. Also I brought up Maison Ikkoku already, which DIDN'T adapt the original manga 1:1 even though it could have. The anime removed a main character and a lot of side-characters in an effort to focus solely on the main love rivalries. That's pretty common too really. Or Urusei Yatsura which propped up a minor unnamed character from the early portion of the series and made him more important than various canon characters.

I'm sure the show will come out and be perfectly fine, maybe even great, and get its own audience of new fans that never cared for the source material, just like MAWS, but this still sucks for autists that are fan of the original stuff like me.
I sure can't wait for people who have never even touched a comic book in their lives to talk about how this series "fixes" Green Lantern, or that the comics should be more like it, or that every new GL adaptation should be more like this series, or how these are actually the best versions of the characters.
