It has never been harder to get your foot in the door. Almost all industry people have been out of work since early 2023, productions ended across the board to the point where there is barely any actual work available anywhere. And any job that does pop up, you are going to be competing with dozens to possibly hundreds of people with significantly larger and nicer work histories on bigger projects with better connections. Up and comers with no history don't have a chance.

Go spend about 10 minutes on Linkedin and see all the terminally out of work story artists, animators, and background designers bemoaning how they have not had anything but scraps for two years to get a good impression how shit things are in the animation world in Burbank.

When jobs become more viable in those places, you'll see more people move. Anons seem to think that all the animators who are struggling in LA right now haven't already fucking thought of this stuff. The sad truth is that as dead as the LA animation industry is at the moment, that's STILL where all the jobs are. I think people are trying to wait it out hoping the jobs come back. Even if things are getting going in Florida and Atlanta, nothing is currently staffing up to any serious degree. Moving would require blowing thousands of dollars to move to another state and get a new apartment just to be stuck with no job and now more debt than they had before.

Weirdly Nico is in a better position than that guy. He had a few good years at Adult Swim....20+ years ago. But now he does not have any new skills, does not know the current technology, all his close contacts are likely retired or dead, and he just has nothing to offer a studio.

Nico is doing a little better maintaining a lot of personal contacts and is still working on some current productions (as of at least two or three years ago) and has much more varied work under his belt.

Georgia really doesn't have enough to make it a viable spot just yet. They mostly have Bento Box, Floyd County, and Awesome Inc. With a few other sprinkled around but things are drying up there too since Primal Screen went under a year ago. They are all pretty tiny and hire less than 100 people. Also you have SCAD in town with a couple hundred new students flooding into that really tiny market every single year.

Florida is still not really in a better spot than any other state, they have a small handful of tiny studios of 20 or so employees, nothing really big happening in any one of them. I would not consider them to be any more special than Ohio or Illinois for animation jobs. California studios have not yet moved any operations out of their state so Burbank is still the place to be if one wants work of a higher profile than a local commercial or mobile game. Most are trying to wait out the lull, but it gets harder when they are moving into the third year of it and common Burbank/Glendale rent is about $2500-3200 a month.

People did know it, but the issue is that's pretty much all he does. His resume is essentially Brak and characters that are just like Brak. People like Patrick Warburton are trained actors so while Brock Sampson sounds the same as Joe Swanson and Kronk, they all *feel* like very different characters. Andy Merrill seems like a great guy, but if every character both sounds and acts like Brak, then he's probably not going to get the call unless someone needs to cast "essentially Brak".

Unfortunately, there are a lot of creatives that don't understand how something trivial or potentially mediocre could mean the world to someone. Especially a kid. They don't realize that even though they're not working on "high art" (whatever that is), there can be people out there that love what you're making. While I don't think animation is just for kids, in the West it's certainly not mainstream among adults. The stereotypical well adjust adult (whatever that is) doesn't care for cartoons. They're above that or something.

I suppose people like only think their work is valuable if the correct people like it. If commoners like it, or kids, it's not good enough. The "elite" have to like it (whoever they are).
