Was Cerebus the Adventure Time of comic books? Both series started off episodic and poked fun at fantasy tropes before transitioning to more dramatic longer storylines, then went too far up their asses by becoming more abstract and experimental with deeper introspective themes

Adventure Time is Cerebus but progressive

No, Cerebus had elements of taking itself seriously even from the start and artistically it's like the complete inverse of Adventure Time where it revels in highly detailed art with extremely dynamic composition. The "abstract experimental" phase you're talking about was also a product of the creator going genuinely insane, with Adventure Time it was tantamount to fart-sniffing. Cerebus was also carried by the same hand all the way through, Adventure Time's creator left before it even reached the mid-way point and then the show became a victim of writing room wars.

They're completely incomparable.

This, it honestly feels fucking insulting to compare Cerebus to "Pretentious Time with Noodle Man". Even the parts where Sim was crazy.

This. Cerebus, even in the most schizophrenic later volumes, has infinitely more artistic value. I actually think the derangement of Dave Sim is one of the most fascinating aspects of it from that angle as well.

Most people have seen that one image depicting cats drawn by a guy going progressively insane until they're just fractal LSD monsters, and I don't know if that's actually a real story or not, but Cerebus is much the same. As it progresses you can very much see Sim's descent in real time as the comic becomes more dreamlike and bizarre. The time period becomes inconsistent, using elements of the modern day when it sees fit, Cerebus' stories and interactions become more abstract and metaphorical, and it's all very interesting. I wouldn't say later Cerebus is a great story but as a reflection of the creator it is a truly interesting look into the mind of a nutjob who maintains enough talent and lucidity to create something consistently beautiful.

Why do people think this kind of thing is especially uncommon?

The points OP bring up are so superficial you could say the same thing of just about any series that started out episodic then became more serialized featuring a male lead. Superman comics could fit the bill. Shit Evangelion fits the bill.

Those crazy fractal LSD cats were actually drawn throughout his life. There are plenty of examples of him drawing regular cats from later in his life right alongside them. It seems like he just really liked trippy imagery and did that in his own time.

Not to discredit Sim's decent into madness of course. His was pretty linear.

Most stories will start out feeling episodic because that's essentially what the world building part was. You introduce your characters and world in lower stakes bits that are easier to digest, start slowly peppering in the bigger mystery and then BAM you pull the rug out from under people when it's time to to get serious. That was the basic elements of story telling. Even Lord of the Rings starts out with the hobbits getting into comparatively more mundane challenges before they get to the prancing pony. It's like modern audiences are so lacking in exposure that the seconds they see even the most basic pattern they have to make a fuss out of it and try to attach it to t he thing they just watched.

That part of both the book and movie are comfy as fuck. Instead of all this bullshit they're doing fucking with the lore they should just make a series about a group of fat hobbit fucks getting into drunken mischief around the Shire. But I digress, yes it is kind of embarrassing that people see such basic storytelling elements and try to tie them just to a small number of modern things.
