Maybe you intended to post this on /a/, but I agree. Modern day mecha stuff is not only kinda rare, but when it is done, it is usually 3D stuff.
While I can see the reason why (animating all of that in 2D must be absolute hell), it showed an incredible, unprecedented passion for the job.

Not only that, I think the art style was great, too. Modern productions sometimes have great animation and backgrounds and details as well, but 80's - late 90's stuff were amazing, specially considering they didn't have the same tools modern studios have.

I don't know why I don't like modern anime, but I just don't. Any suggestions for some older anime? There's one with a chick with green hair that shocks a guy I want to learn more about but I don't know the name. Also, is it just me? Am I wrong for not liking those modern shows?

Give Knights of Sidonia and Blame! a try for more modern stuff. It's got some kind of shitty CG but it works for the guy's style.

For older stuff, I really liked Bubblegum Crisis (both the 80s OAV series and the 2000s full series), Project A-ko (I have not seen the sequels). For not quite as old, anything by Satoshi Kon is amazing. Most people probably know Paranoia Agent since that was on cable.
