Redpill me on Udon, they seem to be a bit of a polarizing company.

They bring over some very good books but then their own stuff is extremely hit and miss. As in ranging from reasonably good to absolutely fucking awful.

Also their main PR guy is a stereotypical chuddie on Twitter so a lot of gays and trannies don't like them.

I'm pretty upset they didn't finish reprinting Silent Mobius. They were like half way through the series and those volumes are pretty pricy now. Viz finished the original series but the art was flipped and no one has ever touched the sequel materials. There aren't even English translations online it sucks. I know that's not /co/ but I think Udon has a tendency to just drop shit at random or poorly market stuff and that's just an example that comes to mind. I liked the old Darkstalkers book and I was upset that it just kind of randomly stopped.

I bought a silver-inked shantae shirt from them at comic-con
It's cool
Gonna pick up the shantae swimsuit special when it comes out next month.
I'm picking up the megaman timeline comics they're putting out.....
I wish they'd make more GOOD shirts and posters... I'm mainly interested in megaman legends and Shantae...

Got a few copies of it on ebay for me and my wife. It mogs the Street Fighter swimsuit specials because it at least has a story.

The Street Fighter ones aren't bad, just a little overpriced for what's essentially jpegs of SFW Genzoman and Reiq art.

nah I would say they are lackluster at best with how the tend to run on fanfiction and speculation from the American fans only. Nothing bad with it but you can tell that the Street Fighter they do is different enough to not be SF at all. Akuma is a great example, he's a much more chill and focused on perfecting himself in the games and bits of lore but in their version, he's pure evil

A rather mediocre company whose biggest legacy is that they somehow have had licenses to Capcom properties for decades and still haven't produced anything noteworthy with it

the thing is, if they really fancied themselves as a comic book company too they could fill in those gaps that we know Capcom never would.

They have their own thing with wanking SF2 adnauseum because that's what people recognize the series from (mainstay cast, personalities etc with no change whatsoever). Instead, what Udon does is double down on this and never be interesting enough to come up with new things for Street Fighter.

If they wanted, they could have done something worthwhile with Gill and the Illuminati, G from SF V and even Necalli. But instead they keep repeating the worst moves from Capcom and further stagnate the series as a whole. Only thing mildly cool are the swimsuit specials but I only get them on collected editions

>he's a much more chill and focused on perfecting himself in the games and bits of lore but in their version, he's pure evil
Udon started their SF comics when SF4 vanilla hadn't come out yet, by that point Akuma was confirmed to be a guy who killed his master, his brother (lolretcon), Bison/Vega just for the lulz and maybe? possibly? Gen. He also kept harassing Ryu to turn him to the dark side of whatever. Not nearly as evil as Vega/Bison, but far from being chill. The most chill he was was in that piece of trivia about him selling shit on the market like any other asian old man.

It's with SF4 onward that they started pushing more on the angle of "lonely monk with anger issues", with his friendship with Elena, nobody being killed except Goutetsu (who was likely an asshole anyway) and him deciding after a while to leave Ryu alone (kind of). I don't blame Udon for going with what was clearly the initial intended path for the character: a guy who wasn't exactly evil incarnate, but was evil enough to go around and kill people simply because they were strong enough.

back when it came out, in the biggest drought of Darkstalkers anything, I did like it. But looking back, man does it feel like from that era. I did enjoy the first SF vs they did but it was with the SFV cast which was not that much of a good crossover moment. I'm glad they're doing another one now because Darkstalkers is so 90s that the current version of SF with 6 feels like trying to bring back the flavor of Third Strike

>>149848752
I'm not saying that Akuma is a good guy by any means. Being an antagonist and being evil are not the same thing. One thing that does set him apart from Bison etc is that he's honorable. The reason I think Oni exists is precisely for the devs to have their cake and eat it too. They have a completely separate character they can point to whenever Akuma goes in to the deep end. Akuma's whole schtick is that he was able to keep the Satsui no Hado under control to proof his superior mastery and power.

I like to think he taunts Ryu to put him to the test and see if he too can conquer that bloodlust. But didn't count on Ryu figuring another way out with the Power of Nothingness.

Akuma is not clearly defined by Capcom because they want to keep everyone else exactly the same form their SF2 personality. He was even planned in SFV or 6 to be like a Lone Wolf and Cub situation with a child strapped on his back, showing that the character is more than just frowny martial arts guy with purple fireballs.

I know Udon has to keep a certain level of consistency because they work under the biggest licence for Capcom next to Resident Evil. I'm just saying that if they want to be taken seriously as more than artbook company, then make some damn good stories. Even more so if the pr guy keeps harping on "member when comics were gud" type of shit

They mostly do original comics based on IP owned by Capcom, and also occassionally publish manga.
Their street fighter comics are way better than they have any right to be. They're actually trying to make a bit of a capcom comic book universe right now crossing over Darkstalkers and Street Fighter in the recent comics.

>He was even planned in SFV or 6 to be like a Lone Wolf and Cub situation with a child strapped on his back, showing that the character is more than just frowny martial arts guy with purple fireballs.
Again, this kind of direction with the character wasn't defined by the time Udon started introducing him in their comics, they had a much more generic character to work with and they went with what was, at the time, clearly the intended archetype for Akuma. He was an antagonist and kind of evil too (murdering people because they're strong is not good mmkay), just not on the level of Bison or even Vega.

I agree that Udon writes mediocre stories at best, which I think is strictly correlated with the fact they want to follow the canon as much as they can because, well, SF canon is mediocre at best too.

bru by this point you're arguing 1 example of a larger thing I was trying to make. I particularly don't care if Akuma was evil or not or whathaveyou

I'm just saying Udon is softballing their comics. In part because it's a license and people don't have much expectations on them but also if they want to be considered more than an artbook company, put some effort into the characters they have.

>SF canon is mediocre at best too
that's a copout excuse. Just because Capcom drops the ball suddenly doesn't make it ok for others to do so. I may take it more personal because I see fans putting in more thought into these characters than official releases. It's also a gripe if the current flowchart talking points of the comic industry being nothing but empty stories with no passion then why have another company do the same thing

I will leave it at that, I really don't care that much about Udon to keep doing this nor do I think they deserve it. Better stick to things I actually enjoy

I wasn't excusing them, just stating the reason on why they are the way they are. I'm not denying that their mediocrity is their fault.
