How should Spider-Man look?
This is the ideal Spidey design. You may not like it, but this is what peak menace looks like.

Sam Raimi because I’m a fat incel retard and I don’t have any taste and I’m too illiterate to read comics and also I’m gonna be a huge asshole about my opinion and treat it like it’s a fact because I’m an entitled narcissistic brat who thinks only what I grew up with was good and I have to say everything else sucks because it gives me a release of dopamine and makes me feel superior to all the other plebs despite being in my thirties and working in retail but also long as I defend a stupid jew who made dogshit movies that bastardized the characters, it’s all good!

I actually particularly like that because it easily sets itself apart even from other similar designs. my only bother with the new USM suit is how it looks almost indistinguishable from regular 616, and while it may be intentional it does lose a bit of identity there unlike the old USM and its iconic Bagley designs. Start with Amazing Fantasy #15 then read the Ditko run (ASM # 1-38) feel free to read the guest appearances in other books if you want, too. After that, the original creator of Spider-Man tragically departs the story forever leaving us all to wonder what could have been.

If you want to keep going after that point feel free to, it should stay pretty decent up until ASM # 314.

One off that got popular. Really, the most popular one off they ever had. And for good reason. I've still got to find a way to put it into words, but you'll see the Ditko era has what could possibly be the greatest comic book formula ever created. The way he seamlessly sets up Pete's cast to constantly bounce the plot back and forth and continuously forward while making them all colorful characters that themselves advance the plot and introduce drama in every scene is spectacular, amazing, and unrepeated to this day.

For those asking where to start:

>Amazing Fantasy #15
Origin and first appearance.
>Amazing Spider-Man 1~ max 350 (ideally stop when Stern leaves)
Ditko to Stern and then some extra reading as the quality tapers off. Still very much a good time until Carnage, Peter's parents, and a bunch of other 90's garbage shows up.

If you're looking for supplemental reading do not read Amazing any further, instead read:

>Spectacular Spider-Man: 1~200
Secondary title that focuses on Peter's cast of characters as well as lower stakes adventures.
>Marvel Team-Up: 1~150
Very light fare exploring Spidey's relationship with the greater Marvel Universe. Short, self-contained episodic adventures.
>Web of Spider-Man: 1~100
Tertiary title that has some hidden gems but mostly inoffensive fluff.

>Ditko era has what could possibly be the greatest comic book formula ever created.
It's crazy how he managed to make a conventional superhero story that wasn't pretentious. He used ASM to tell everyone how he thought a hero should be. And for doing that, you also had to show the kind of things Peter had to deal with in his personal life. Peter trying to maintain his morality while also under the pressure of those troubles are a big lesson. And he wasn't perfect from the get go. This is the kind of thing that you could only expect from an objectivist because of how much they value justice and how idealistic they are about it. You see explicit examples of objectivist ideas in If this be my destiny, but also in other stories like Otto's first appearance. Furthermore, it's obvious that Ditko contributed to Amazing Fantasy 15's plot. He believed that if you could fight for justice then you were obliged to do it. Peter learns that.
>And a lean, silent figure slowly fades in the gathering darkness, aware at last that in this world, with great power there must also come -- great responsibility!
The Ditko run transcends the superhero genre, it's something else
Anonymous No.149848142

Ditko was a nutter. His ASM run was fine but the character grew and matured immensely after that stunted man-child left the title... until a different stunted man-child in the early 2000's decided that Peter Parker should never have grown beyond the early 1980's

Contrarianism? Hating the Raimi costume is contrarianism. Well sometimes it's justified because certain moviefags are annoying. But the Insomniac costume looks bad. Whenever they try to give to the classic costume a modern look, it always ends up being overdesigned and forgettable. And it happened again in Rivals

So? That's the worst argument you can use here. At least I don't care about popularity. I wouldn't instantly hate something because it is popular, I simply don't care. It's a bad suit, and I already explained why. In fact, you're the one who isn't giving a valid argument

The one argument in favor of the Advanced Suit is that they totally own it, easily recognizable as "Insomniac Spider-Man" the same way you would hear "Arkham Batman"
The one dude who went suited up to the showing of NWH I was in was wearing that one, so it is iconic, regardless of what we think.

Ben's suit has slowly grown on me over the years.

I don't know why, but the Edge of Time suit always looked stellar to me. It isn't just the cloth fabric, it's the inconsistent stitching with the web pattern. It looks more homemade than basically every other costume.

JRJR during his peak, unquestionably.
He doesn't portray Spider-Man with the same athleticism as Todd or Bagley do, but he was great at drawing dimensions and depth, I think of his as being the most immersive for the character. I'd take those setpieces over realistic shading or overly articulated spaghetti webs
His only major flaw is the sameface syndrome

I genuinely mourn the demise of JRJR's art during his peak. nowadays on /co/ he's only ever discussed unfavourably and it's not hard to see why, he's gotten shit over the years and the sameface syndrome is particular noticeable but during the early 2000s his Spidey illustrations were lovely and really reminiscent of the era for me. it sucks that his prolonged career along with his downfall in quality means most people only ever associate him with mediocre to dogshit art, and not what it used to be.

I think it didn't help that no matter how good his work could've been, his comeback was tethered to possibly one of the worst relaunch the main book has produced since the late 2000s, I still think he's a great artist and some of his covers are really nice, but it certainly lacks the same edge as his clone saga and vol 2 works

I don't think you can, she straight up just reused Ben's suit but I don't dislike the idea of small alterations like that. in my mind this suit is now firmly iconic as Mayday's look and not Ben, which is good because I think his Scarlet Spider outfit is far more iconic for him anyway

Good artists draw Mayday with a smaller and more feminine head and lenses.

As for the other differences, Mayday's spider has thinner legs and the upper ones wrap on the sides rather than over the shoulders. The cut of the red section on the abdomen is more V shaped while Ben's has wider angles.

>I don't think you can, she straight up just reused Ben's suit but I don't dislike the idea of small alterations like that.
Well, in-universe she burned the suit very early on and sewed another, for all we know it already had been altered.
