A bunch of cards from the upcoming Avatar MtG set were previewed today. This is not the complete set, there will be more cards.

It's pretty simple:
Airbending temporarily pushes stuff away.
Waterbending has you do a group effort for a big effect
Earthbending lets your land cards deal damage
Firebending rewards you for attacking by giving you fuel for other stuff

This. I can see many more people getting on WotC for that. One workaround would be to add flavor text spelling it out for those that don't get it.

MtG is well, well past soured Flavorwise.
That ship is a half decade past sailed at least, the last few years have seen them try to push big event after big event, endless outside IP slop, print on demand cards 80% of which are utter visual diarrhea and a complete disregard for anything that made the lore unique or cool.

As a nonsports card collector, if MtG players hate outside IPs, they should start traditional, non-TCG nonsports card publishers to compete for licenses. It's more difficult to sustain non-gaming nonsports cards, but y'all've built robots to do your sorting, you can figure out a way to make nonsports sustainable.

The worst thing to happen to nonsports was getting rid of the gum. The second was hitching the entire hobby to comic book shops, in the 90s. When the comic book and sports card market collapsed, so did the nonsports market, and aside from TCGs, it never recovered.

Here's the green /50 parallel of Azula's card from the 2021 Topps set

Yeah, but the one he screwed up on was the entire punchline. It's the one the whole episode is most known for, to the point where "Sokka Haiku" is a meme in itself.
>Plus this way they avoid a wave of DURR HURR WIZARDS CAN'T HAIKU from people that don't get a reference.
I mean, I guess? But that just seems like a silly concern to have when the entire point of these cards is to primarily be fanservice to causals that WOULD get the joke. If they're going to pander, don't half-ass it like this, else you risk appealing to nobody.

It compares similarly to Dismiss (4cmc counter + draw). Being a lesson makes it easily tutorable which is completely wild. I think this card is at least as good as Cryptic Command which is a shame because Cryptic Command SHOULD be an extremely powerful card but is probably totally unplayable in even standard right now.

I'm saying that until very recently universes beyond cards have been very Commander focused so it's odd to see a universes beyond set resurrect a card type that doesn't function in Commander. Especially when the only other set with lessons in no longer playable in standard.

Lessons function in commander, as the subtype has no special rules. They're just cards.
It's the Learn ability that doesn't fully function in commander. Learn can't grab Lessons from outside the game in commander, but you can still pick the option to discard/draw a card instead.
There is absolutely nothing stopping them from simply creating another ability that interacts with Lesson cards. Maybe something that searches for them in your deck.

Words that seem like they have no meaning but to justify them the rulings all weigh heavily on which words specifically are used.
So a card like Magician’s Rod that lets you add a card that mentions Dark Magician in its text doesn’t actually work to search Eye of Timeaus despite having the words “Dark Magician” in its text because the phrase on the card is in the context of saying “a monster who’s name contains the words “Dark Magician” (in context of its effect, Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl)”, and not “a monster by the name of Dark Magician”

In Magic, "Legendary Creature" just refers to named characters, regardless of how important or well-known they are in-universe. The "Legend rule" prevents you from controlling 2 copies of the same Legend on the field.

Yup. There were tons of rulings like this where the most famous example is either the Umi/Legendary ocean fuckup, or the red-eyes cards that worked with hundRED-eyes dragon. Nowadays most of it is nipped in the bid except for speedroids being able to mess with roids but that's because roids are so bad that nobody cares.
