simplest reason: nobody wanted it

I looked at this movies like pure adventure, animators trying new characters and taking classic books completely out of context treasure island is a book by the way

This 90's don bluth even chicken little, at a time disney seemed to be dying and pixar reigned supreme this movies were magical in their fancy animation and disfunctional character development

There's been a lot of discussion youtube vidya essays about this, but NGL the reason I didn't care to go watch it when it came out was because the robot annoyed me in the ads. I think we eventually bought it on VHS and I loved it though, and the movie's still great on rewatch after all these years (minus the robot).
IIRC a big hitching point for sales in general though was that Disney (animation) didn't really do that many "serious" movies at the time, so both Treasure Planet and Atlantis had all their prospects dashed since kids weren't really attracted by the ads, and adults didn't watch ""kids movies"" without their kids.

Also fuck, Atlantis is NOT a kids movie, I sure as fuck hope kids weren't taken to that, I remember a screaming crystal man haunting my nightmares for at least a year after that, ha.

The robot absolutely fucked the movie. Instead of marketing towards tweens and teens they marketed towards children, alienating the actual demographic.

Unless its Star Wars or Star Trek sci-fi targeted towards kids and teens always flop hard. There is something about sci-fi and space epics that just turn people off. Even when targeted towards older audiences sci-fi films tend to bomb.

I'll tell you step by step why nobody showed up
>The 70/30 rule was difficult to explain to general masses
>Disney spoiled the big twist concerning Silver in the fucking TV ads
>Disney wanted to move on from 2D because the technology behind Tarzan and Treasure Planet's Legacy Ship was too expensive because they had to pay artists more
>Went against Harry Potter and died, on purpose.
All of that was enough for Disney to call this movie a loss and decide to 86 2D Animation after the cow movie with two other exceptions.
Treasure Planet even had a sequel planned ith Willem Dafoe voicing the villain but Disney cancelled all plans to make this a franchise.

They released it 14 days after the new Harry Potter movie and 7 days after the new James Bond movie

The only thing good about it was the animation
And cat pussy
But other than that
>old story just maks treasure islans sci fi
>robin williams robot wasnt funny
>robot took up too much screen time
>slow pacing in a time when everyone wanted fast animation
>Lilo and stitch was fast.
>you could cut half of treasure planet and no one would notice

Martin Short robot, that was the problem.
Robin could usually pull his shtick back from being obnoxious by being endearing.
