What happened to Joker 2 is actually more common than you might thinks. It's just one of the most blatant examples.
>Joker 1 portrays the Joker as a metally ill loser
>movie is a hit and the Joker becomes more popular than ever
>NOOO YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO LIKE THE JOKER THAT WASN'T THE POINT
>in an attempt to make audiences understand the point they were trying to make, they make an entire movie about how shit it is to be the Joker
>because making a point is now the goal, instead of making a good movie, it's hamfisted, over the top and tasteless
>nobody actually wants to see that, regardless of whether they "got" Joker 1 or not

In another /co/-related example, you can see the exact same thing with The Boys. People liked Homelander too much in the early seasons so they literally torpedoed their own show attempting to make a hamfisted point.

Dumbass, even in the first movie you're not supposed to like him. By the end he's a delusional retard that justifies murdering people and acting like he's above it and is basically the catalyst for why Gotham got so shitty.
Joker 2 wasn't made to "prove a point" it's just showing the natural conclusion to being someone like that. You become a prison bitch and have your life ruined one way or the other.
Show me a single time Todd Philips or any of the people working on the movie disliked how much the first movie resonated with them in terms of liking the Joker. No? Nothing? You faggots are just projecting? What else is new
I think anyone that says Joker 2 was some "gotcha" at people that liked Joker are genuinely retarded or butthurt. True the movie spelled it out too much but even the first one showed that you do NOT want to be like Joker. You're just upset that the 2nd one didn't sugarcoat it

Aren't you two just agreeing with a few extra steps? He literally says that the first movie portrays him as a mentally ill loser (who by author intention you're not supposed to like, but was liked anyway); but he claims that the second movie is a doubling down of that intent to make it clear rather than just a natural conclusion. So the real divergence in opinion is whether or not they purposefully overdid the second movie as a reaction to the audience of the first to establish how terrible the Joker's life really is.
Whatever they were trying to accomplish with the second, saying that the second movie "spelled it out too much" may as well be an understatement. By any reasonable metric, the whole 'assfucked by corrupt cops so that all the remaining joy in his existence seeps out of his ruined anus' was seen as too much or bizarrely comical by most people. Everyone I knew laughed about it when they heard of it and wrote the movie off as not worth seeing.

The relationship between the Batman and the Joker can be so damn gay at times.

yeah and that's fun to watch and cool
Joker 1 is LITERALLY just capeshit Taxi Driver. That's why it's entertaining. No, the Joker murdering people is not good, but you can see what drove him to that point and the movie does a good job of showing how rotten and corrupt Gotham is that it produces men like this.

he is literally gang raped and sodomized by the prison guards and from that point on abandons his Joker persona.
They don't show full penetration, but they're not stripping his clothes off and crowding him naked in the prison showers just to beat him. A mere beating does not break the Joker and permanently ruin him to be nothing more than Arthur Fleck. Punching the joker in the face just makes him smile harder.

It's 100% intended as prison rape and anyone who's not disingenuous as fuck was disgusted by this retarded movie made out of spite towards the first's success

There is no spite. Youโ€™re angry because you want Arthur to be a hero when all he is is a mentally ill man who stopped taking his pills, developed delusions of grandeur and killed people. The sequel is about him falling back to his delusions, fall in love and show that deep down he is not a criminal mastermind, not a figure of rebellion, not a movement leader. Heโ€™s a sad, broken man who just wanted to be loved and nobody accepts him as he really is. Thatโ€™s why Harley dumps him and the other inmate stabs him. They are the audience wanting Arthur to be something he never was and throwing a tantrum when they donโ€™t get what they want from him. The enormous backlash is absolutely perfect encapsulation of it.

>Youโ€™re angry because you want Arthur to be a hero
I don't want him to be a hero. The first movie is just Gotham Taxi Driver. If Scorsese made a sequel to Taxi Driver where Travis is gangraped in prison and reduced to a cowardly wreck I would think that's fucking retarded too.
>There is no spite.
lol
this is just being contrarian for the sake of it, yes joker 2 was entirely made out of spite, Todd Philips literally said he didn't want to make the movie period

nobody enjoys it, it's just some walks-her-home-gently level denial to pretend that's not exactly what the script and direction isn't showing. this pathetic attempt at deflection where you blame audiences for hating something you put in the movie by pretending they're reading too deep into tea leaves is embarrassing. Nobody is dumb enough to fall for it.

>the first one showed that you do NOT want to be like Joker. You're just upset that the 2nd one didn't sugarcoat it
WTF are you talking about? No one IRL wants to emulate the Joker. We know Joker is evil, and no one wants to be him. He's just interesting to watch as a villain. We wanted to be entertained. Light from Death Note, Darth Vader, Griffith from Berserk, Vaas from Far Cry? They're all villains, and I have literally met no one who said they wanted to follow their example.

I swear you Philips apologists just make up random, false accusations that aren't true. I like the first movie because Arthur was a serial killer and started a political movement that was hindering the city. He was terrorist like in the comics, and you can see why he is Batman's archenemy.

Joker 2 was a fucking musical borefest that went too long and spent too much time telling the audience that Arthur was a loser. Joker is based on a comic book; you guys still read comics, right? He's supposed to end up as being a threatening force to Batman.

Expecting a Joker origin story revealing how he became Batman's archenemy and how he got there isn't something you should be shocked about when you don't get it, and fans get pissed that this wasn't actually the real Joker.

It would be like if Disney did an Emperor Palpatine movie, but instead of focusing on his rise to power, it portrayed him as a loser the entire film, only to be tricked by the studio into revealing that we weren't actually watching the real Emperor the whole timeโ€”he was just a clone. So you just wasted everyone's time watching this nonsense.

That's how it feels to watch Joker 2. It wasn't even about Joker's origin story that the studio marketed it as to fans. We we literally just watching a pretender.
