It's simpler that than that, Spider-Man gets his ass kicked so he can comeback in a new suit to defeat the villain of the arc so that Marvel can turn into action figures. At the end of this Hellgate arc he gets an ugly yellow suit. In issue 1000 he'll get a new suit to defeat Mephisto.
Sometimes they'll do the opposite where he starts out with a new suit, get his ass kicked in it, only to go back to basics with the original suit.
