As trite as Joker can be in the wrong hands or too much exposure, it's actually an interesting subject.
Firstly it depends on the interpretation, originally and often he's just homicidal and getting his kicks by making it out as dark humor.
However TDK and TKJ imply the antisocial behavior stems from him wanting to trivialize normalcy and/or force people to accept anyone can become unraveled with enough justification, or injustice once they realize how thoroughly the system can fail.
e.g.

>"I'm not...No, I'm not."
TDK Joker's twitchy response to Gambol's offhand remark and several other instances indicate he takes personal umbrage with feeling he's moral wrong for his behavior, if it was just an act he'd just laugh it off.

>"Don't get even, get mad!"
TKJ Joker at the end of his musical number stresses embracing insanity, or more accurately abandon to the very hopes and expectations that bring dejection when you're disappointed, to survive the unfairness of reality.
However TKJ also implied there was some traumatizing incident that caused Joker's psyche to induce retrograde amnesia and substitute that point in his life with narratives that are easier to process.
That said, when he's presented like Batman TAS and the Arkham games he's mostly doing the crime thing of his own volition like said above
