If there's anyone Spidey is gonna make fun of, it's going to be a guy trying to kill him. That Kirby issue was weird with Peter just showing up to Johnny's party just to stir up shit. Even when Reed and Ben tried to get him to cool it, Peter tried to go toe-to-toe with the F4. Best you can say is Peter got really sick of Johnny being a public darling while he's always treated like a public nuisance.

Well that was always sort of the point. A villain, say Magneto, has a tragic back story and it broke him. Because he let his rage and pain consume him he became the very monster that created him. It's the tragic irony of villains. Their backstory is not meant to be an excuse or even a justification. It's an explanation and a reminder that we too could fall down the dark path if we don't strive for goodness.

This wasn't accidental, the whole point of the scene was having Marvel's Turbo Nazi point out that Magneto is as bad as him or worse, written at a time when when virtually everyone at Marvel except Claremont wanted Magneto to be a villain.

The problem was that fandom in general just celebrated the story as "A Holocaust survivor beats up a Nazi", Wizard recommended the issue several times, and perpetuated this take on the issue.

I feel like if your property is failing and you bring in someone to fix it - and then said fixing causes it to become a best selling comic for multiple decades - that person kind of becomes the authority on what should be done with the characters.

That's a really disingenuous argument, because it implies that the reason for Silver Age X-Men not taking off was Magneto, and that he was inherently "broken" in some way, and also that Claremont turning Magneto into Muh Holocaust Man was the one singular thing that made X-Men a best selling comic, both of which are completely untrue. Magneto actually saw more use than the X-Men themselves during the years they were cancelled, and the book had become one of Marvel's best sellers before he got that origin.

We can acknowledge that Claremont and Byrne turned X-Men into a comic that sold well while also acknowledging that once they split and didn't have the other around as a balance, and were too big for most editors to say no to, they both did some really stupid things that did a lot of damage to Marvel, and this was one of them.

Now let's just agree to disagree and get back to Spider-Man in a Spider-Man Thread.

I suppose everyone has a Spider-man that 'got it right' for them. Who's yours?
Mine's 90's TAS. I used to think it was nostalgia but upon re-watching it he showcased his smarts more than once, needing Peter Parker to help Spider-man, he could be brash and hot-headed even without the symbiote, and he was built like a tank instead of a twink.

He's got the right amount of self-interested, "tired of everyone's shit" attitude I want out of the character while not being a totally jaded asshole.
I also love the voice, feels like voice acting for Spidey is pretty one note nowadays, but Jake Johnson left such an impression on me that it's actually how I read Pete's dialog in the comics now.
It's a shame the crew is clearly more interested in exploring Miles cause I feel like a whole movie just out of Peter B. doing his thing sans multiverse shenanigans would be a hit.

he was created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and was always an asshole villain, him being a holocaust survivor turning around and enacting a holocaust of his own against humanity was meant to be ironic, he'd learned all the wrong lessons and really believed the only problem was the wrong people were being exterminated.
That's why Red Skull gets along with him, they're both supremacist racist genocidal maniacs, they just disagree over which is the master race.

Kirby was at least trying to make him sound like Spidey, but due to writing FF and wanting to use Spidey as a villain he had to write him out of character. Spidey would never go chasing down a dame and crash a party acting like a scoundrel trying to impress her. He would either be busy with his own thing and wait until he naturally ran into her or maybe go out of his way to pay her a direct visit if that wasn't likely to ever happen, but if she didn't take the bait right off the bat he would be done with her, perhaps for good.

Generational difference. People like Kirby were war veterans, and nerd culture, if it existed at all, was different. Meanwhile, most post-70s writers were raised in the city, coddled Gen X writers who were already nerds, and that vision ended up in the character. Not to mention modern readings that say that β€œincorrect” behavior is unheroic. That's why I don't like Superman's optimism crap. It's an invention of outsider media, which really ended up becoming part of the β€œcanon,” but it wasn't how the character was originally written.

>Floored that he actually got a date with a superhero celebrity like the Invisible Girl, Peter spent the next few hours with his head in the clouds. In typical Spider-Man fashion, however, he had to turn down his then-love interest Betty Brant when she suggests they go out that night. The rest of the night continued to go downhill. When he picked up Sue (sporting a web bow tie), Spidey realized that as a superhero-on-a-budget he couldn’t afford to take Sue anywhere fancy. Sue even had to drive the two in the FF’s flying car and Spidey could only take her out for pizza. To make matters worse, Sue did nothing but talk about her problems with Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richard and the Sub-Mariner during their entire date!
>Meanwhile Johnny, still fuming over his sister’s date with Spider-Man, managed to convince the Sub-Mariner that Sue has been kidnapped by Spider-Man. Furious, Namor smashed into the pizza parlor and challenged Spider-Man to a fight. Sue had to call in the rest of the Fantastic Four and explain the situation to Namor. Why? What's your problem with Bailey? Are you a racist that hates white people or something? You need the protagonist to look like yourself?

I can see the movie right now:
>older Peter married to MJ
>he has stepped back as Spider-Man when Mayday was born
>as a result, underground crime was allowed to flourish
>Bailey is snatched away from his mother and subjected to horrible experiments that give him his powers
>he escapes, but can't go back to his mom because he's on the run
>he idolizes Spider-Man so he wants to be a hero like him
>makes a patchwork costume to fight crime with inbetween sleeping on benches
>Peter catches wind of this
>torn between his need to be there for his wife and underage daughter and his need to help a fanboy with superpowers before he gets killed
>Peter suits up for the first time in a while and makes his grand return
>clears house and offers to protect Bailey under the guise of training him
>he once again has to juggle his personal life with his superhero work
>foes, old and new, appear from the woodwork to seize the city, not knowing Spider-Man has returned
>Bailey learns to leave the heavy lifting to the grownups and do what he can instead, reuniting with his mother in the end
>Peter learns that power and responsibility extend to all aspects of his life, and he can't neglect one of them for the sake of another
>in fact, his interactions with Bailey inspire him to propose having another kid with MJ

That time the almost joined the Avengers didn't go so well because the Avengers were acting like dumb bureaucrats. They gave Peter 1 day to decide if he wanted to join up, and when he did they didn't have an initiation test ready. Pretty much wasting Peter's whole afternoon. Then they sent him to capture the Hulk without explaining what they wanted with the Hulk, so Peter just like Hulk go.
The Kirby issue is still wildly out of character for Peter, Romita did a much better job keeping Peter's personality consistent.

The Fantastic Four aren't rich. Almost all their money goes into research. They just have all their needs taken care of with either money set aside for living expenses or science. Peter tried to join them early into his superhero career and found that out and left pissed off. And Peter has never been able to get rich off of his work. Another early story had him trying to sell his webbing but it dissolved so nobody wanted it. Peter devotes all his research to tech that helps him fight crime. And when he was a billionaire, that was because of Otto and Peter tanked the company. There's also the time when he was a member of the Future Foundation but that was a side thing for him.

So if he lived and stayed with the F4 he would probably have done the same thing he did when he joined the Avengers and moved Aunt May and MJ in there. Not rich or anymore famous than he already is but no more money problems aside from the occasional story about the F4 being broke.

As a whole I liked Spider-Girl but there are some things I just wasn't a fan of. The number of side stories that were introduced and either forgotten or hastily wrapped up much later. How May was hung up on her cousin who tried to kill her multiple times and was happy with a reformed villainess that she became friends with (For real that girl has horrible taste and luck in men. Peter at least had better romance options when he was younger). The April clone being evil and only really atoning for her sins by sacrificing herself when it was a perfect setup for May to have an antihero sister that the family was starting to accept. And maybe other nitpicks regarding teen drama that felt off. Still a good series.

There is nothing about ITSV that couldn't be done with Mayday in the protagonist's seat (or Ultimate Peter if you really want to keep the multiverse bullshit).
These movies were created as agenda to begin with, as stated by Lord and Miller themselves. You're only having a melty because you know that there's nothing interesting about movie Miles either, but you've attached your identity to the movie so you perceive any slight upon it as a slight upon yourself.

He's funny, he's charismatic, he's not dickridden like a wonderkid from the getgo, he starts out scared, he fucks up his swings, as far as Spider-Men go he has a unique design aesthetic attributed to him (I like Mayday and obviously Ben's important to her origin but it doesn't change the fact that she's recycling his suit) and he has a good mentor-student relationship with Peter. Again, my main problem with every other Peter/Miles dynamic is that they try to make them peers, have both be Spider-Man at the same time (this is always going to be stupid and forced no matter what so having 616-based Peter briefly mentor a 1610-based Miles who lost his Peter was the perfect workaround to this hence why the multiverse story works well here) and give Miles insane feats & powers that overshadow Peter. ITSV Miles does not come with any of that baggage I hate so why do I HAVE to force myself to hate him? Admittedly, I still don't like the fucking venom blasts or him initially being the only Spider-Man who goes against the "canon event" system for the sake of protagonist glorifying but for every dumb shit they do they also do a good thing which in this case was giving Peter his family back and this is why I advocated this version of Peter in the first place. This argument was never about Miles but you fucks love to bring him into the conversation.
>has an intense hostile visceral reaction at the idea of having the movie be about her instead of Miles
You have an intense case of schizophrenia and are recalling events that never happened. I'm saying there's no reason for the movie to be about Mayday when they already did a good job with Miles. >he has a unique design aesthetic
He doesn't. It's just a variant of Peter's suit.
>he has a good mentor-student relationship with Peter
He doesn't. Peter can only tell him the basics, because Miles ultimately relies on his invisibility and OP venom blasts to carry him through the movie and beat the main villain, which Peter couldn't help him with because he never had them.
>giving Peter his family back
Peter shouldn't need Miles' intervention to get his family back.
>no reason
The reason is that every defense for Miles is another yank on Bendis' dick. Miles shouldn't exist and his existence should not be tolerated or referenced at all.
Miles is dogshit in every universe and every incarnation, and the movie was done by ideologues who wanted to downplay and subvert Spider-Man's character and nature in order to push his replacement for PURELY racial and ideological reasons. Peter's depiction in the movie was in service of that, and let's not forget that Lord and Miller described Peter B as the ultimate beta.

Right because no-one was ever able to play DnD, or Mortal Kombat, or read Spider-Man, Batman, Crossed, or Heartstopper, or watch DBZ, Naruto, Sailor Moon or Bible Black. Progressives have ALWAYS had the social power and have always pushed the envelope, the only thing that changes is you eventually reach an age where your values lock into place and then things start "going too far" in the 60s is was the end of segregation, in the 70s it was gender equality, in the 80s it was gay acceptance, in the 90s it was "cool" subtle versions of all the previous (ending apartheid, grrrrl pwr!, and "yeah, I heard he's gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that"), in the 00s it became briefly about American unity post-9/11 balanced out with making fun of Bush. I basically took a bunch of stuff I dislike about the Spider-Man IP nowadays (multiple spider people other than Peter, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Boy, Miles, etc) and tried to make them work in a way I found satisfying.

I was really happy that the new USM has Peter married to MJ with a family, so I decided to go the other way and have Gwen as the love interest and deuteragonist.

Basically, the start of the story has Peter die during his school visit to Oscorp and he gets revived by Dr. Connors with the help of Gwen, his assistant.

Peter wakes up with powers, but a whole year has passed and his uncle and aunt have already mourned him. He uses his own death to basically disappear from the world and be Spider-Man 24/7.
That's the basic premise.
Also Gwen gets bridged as usual, but she gets revived when Peter uses the symbiote on her and she's basically Venom for a while until she becomes Anti-Venom and her design changes to reference Spider-Gwen's usual suit.

The art I posted is actually from the very last arc of the story, where Peter is older, has a daughter with Gwen, and the story has shifted to the perspective of a young Miguel who is caught up in superhero bullshit thanks to Tyler Stone trying to copy the formula that gave Peter his powers.

β€œWoke bad,” anon, woke in comic books is a fringe movement at best. You still have big boob bitches, unfit character designs, mindless and bloodless violence (optimism?), women are tertiary characters at best, never leading, but always behind men. Transsexuals are invisible despite wacky science and biology, sexuality is always boring. It hardly deals with adult topics. Writers and artists still deal with this hostile environment because of a weird parasocial relationship and also because of steady pay. Art hardly sells, and if you're a writer, it's even worse. THAT'S what doesn't make sense. Miles is black, but he's not a "nigga". He's just a black guy, has more in common in mannerisms and interests with the average white guy than any inner city thug. Ghetto black people would accuse him of trying to be white. He wouldn't do this, but it shows what Marvel actually thinks of black people, that they believe this ghetto crap is our universal culture.

I mean he's credited for the writing the dialogue and captions, and it's a caption. You can never be 100% sure, he apparently used ghost writers occasionally, but odds are very good that he wrote that caption. Not much reason to doubt it here. Steve Ditko himself said it was Stan writing the captions if that helps you believe it.
> β€œβ€¦I gave Stan typewriting paper showing my rough ideas of what was being said in the story broken down into panels. Stan never wanted me to write any actual dialogue or names. That goes back to our 5 -page days. Writing, editing, dialogue, sound effects, captions, were all Stan’s division of labor at Marvel.”
>β€œStan’s dialogue style of hero/villain wisecracking, undercut the conflict of hero, villain – but it worked with readers who just wanted to be entertained. I believe Stan loved writing those corny captions. It added to reading appeal but undercut a more serious growth of a teenager in an heroic role.”

Regardless of your race or personal level of racism, it's disgustingly evident that lefty "progressive" types worship black people to the point that they don't see them as people, but as an exotic "other". It's the "noble savage" trope in full effect.
Just by depicting Miles as Thor, they show you how they really feel. Empty worship and pathetic pandering. At no point did they stop to think about the implications of depicting Asgard as a ghetto. You can be certain that they have no idea what the sneakers on the powerlines even mean.

>Oooh, those colored people-I-I mean, people of color (very different) and their fascinating culture that's so much superior to ours! We really need to learn from their noble ways, fellow whites!

Once you look past their honeyed words, you witness racism the likes of which would make your average groyper blush.
And God forbid if a black person disagrees with them. Then they show their true faces.

As a Europoor, we have our own retarded problems, but America is still so fucking weird, man.
