My father-in-law is a cartoonist. We were watching a show together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to animate it today. I will never forget his answer… "We can’t, we don’t know how to do it."
>I do want to address the art because that’s probably been the most universal thing that has shook the new audience when they saw the previews and things like that — that the animation looks so different. I get it, and I get why people who want to revisit the show may be taken aback a little bit. The new animation style is all digital now, but the truth of the matter is, it is impossible to do the show now the way it was done then. The hand-drawn animation, the water colors, those don’t exist anymore. If they exist, they certainly don’t exist at a cost where you can do a TV show. So it has to be updated, and so we updated it with the current style and makeup of animation that animated shows do. I admit it does look different and maybe jarring to some people. I just want to put out there that even though it’s updated, we still went and tried to give it an age old look, to make it feel more like the color palette and the landscape of the original, more so than other shows. We certainly went through a lot of back and forth with the background designers and things like that, to make our colors feel closer to what they felt in the original and the tones and things the most that we could.

Anime has been cutting corners too, many shots are CG'd these days. Modern anime doesn't hold a candle to cel anime
Granted, still far better than western slop.

I appreciate his honesty about addressing this. I didn't think he would, but he came as close as he reasonably can to admitting that the older version looked better and all they can do now is try to make it look less bad.

I think the animation for the new show looks good and given that show makers have a finite budget (not infinite) this is the better move. This means they can dump their resources into voice acting, script writing, sound design, etc. I bet we can get double the episodes with digital animation that we could have gotten otherwise. If the show is great then this is a win. Otherwise your the cartoon equivalent of video games graphics whore.

There's a channel called "Level up Cartooning" that's all about the old, correct way of doing things.

https://www.youtube.com/@LevelUpCartooning

The knowledge is still around, the problem is most animators nowadays can't draw. 90% of the work is done by the computer.

There's like Animal Crossing porn done by one dude now with higher production values than what we get on TV.

South Park has like the cheapest animation style and the last episode had them resorting to AI. They don't give a fuck anymore.

Dude the later seasons were digital too and they didn't look this shit. It's not about the tools not existing, they still animate Hulurama fairly naturally even if it's not as expressive as the show used to be, they're not rigged and lifeless, it's because of budget and not being able to hand animate realistic humans easily anymore.

Total bullshit, you literally just need to put a slight filter over it then it looks almost identical to the old stuff. Grab any image of the new King of the Hill show, turn up the saturation a little & apply a slight blur.

Pic related, does it look perfect? No, but the answer is just some simple colour correction.

It's not that the tools didn't exist anymore it's just that the current ways to do it are so much cheaper. Plus the whole idea of 2nd/3rd screen entertainment had killed animation.

Animator here

It's the fucking software . Toonboom is stupid hard to use and way too expensive. Toonboom works with all the studios educate them but whenever a new feature comes it's because the studios bitched and moaned for it making it harder for new animators and making so technical it's literally slave work. It's powerful thanks to studio but it's so technical they are literally giving out certs to use it.
Tvpaint is slightly easier.

Cell animation is hard as shit too but it's more about being actual skilled draftsman than computer wizardry bullshit. Despite software like toonboom and Adobe animate making animation faster digital animation is about shitting cartoons tweened or not faster to tv and streaming. Being a draftsman is now longer required because you can just the line tool

You can always reverse engineer it/call up the few remaining craftsmen if you spend enough money and have enough time. It's a matter of priorities.

Should've at least had some sort of fantasy sequence he could've animated himself. I get that him only doing some parts would stick out with the rigged shit, and him doing a whole lot of animation work would be a lot to ask (seems most creators barely even write episodes for their shows for some reason, I guess it's that taxing being a showrunner?) but KoTH used to have trippy insane moments like big green mouth Bobby, the laughing students, etc. Find room to do that again and let Judge do it himself. Then it won't matter if it looks off or if his animation ability hasn't been practiced in a long time (not sure the last time he actually animated anything, I'd be curious to see digital work from him)

Anime has been cutting corners since the 70s yet it always managed to have better direction than most western cartoons. I totally agree with you that cgi shit is garbage.
>Modern anime doesn't hold a candle to cel anime
Depends on what you mean by modern. If you are talking about 2000+, I still think that plenty of anime from the 00s were great.
>Granted, still far better than western slop.
Western slop could reach those standards pretty easily if they just tried a little.

At least after the 5 minutes you usually get a cool sequence. While in the west you don't.
