I find it funny how modern Illumination films unironically look better than modern Pixar films
>Backgrounds that are both photorealistic and stylized in a neat way
>Wacky cartoony designs with fluid squash and stretch

Meanwhile Pixar executives would rather force all their projects to be beanmouth GrubHub slop in a shit attempt at appealing to the masses. Like they’re films with multimillion dollar budget Pixar, there’s literally no reason to use that cheap ass overused beanshit style. Illumination is like the most corporate studio ever and not even they use that corporate style.

Their style isn’t the best example of stylized 3D I can think of and their films are still literal toddlerslop, but I just find it funny that they currently have more visual appeal than the actual first studio that should come to mind when one thinks "3D animation"

Its so fucking boring, no reason for it to be animated

They should’ve made it a live action spinoff to release exclusively onto Disney+ rather than putting that embarrassing shit into Pixar’s lineup.

I haven’t see in it but this comparison pic is retarded and unconvincing
lightyear in this pic looks more like a Star Wars character than anything.
and the background doesn’t even have the architectural cubism that the left-hand screenshot does.
there’s no comparison to be made here

nah it would be a good art direction if it was actually a action adventure and not tryhard interstellar rip off with twist villain. I would have liked it more if it was a fun adventure.

Lightyear could’ve at least been visually interesting, The Incredibles whole retrofuturistic aesthetic is an example of how to do stylized 3D sci-fi correctly. Lightyear is boring in comparison.

During Pixars golden age they were seen as something unique, and one of the reasons why was because they had the best 3D animation of any studio, their competitors like Dreamworks and Blue Sky just didn’t compare, and every new Pixar film around then came with a new technological advancement, The Incredibles taught them how to properly animate humans with fat and muscle, Finding Nemo taught them how to animate water, Cars taught them RTX, etc.

But we now live in an age where every studio mastered Pixars techniques, every studio has the budget for super high quality rendering, and Pixar’s new "technological advancements" that come with their films are minor shit like "how do we animate the sea monsters turning into humans in Luca?"

Pixar ain’t special anymore and there was nothing that could’ve prevented this from inevitably happening.

>4 Despicable Me films
>3 Minions films

That’s 7 fucking films of this franchise, they’ve already outmilked Ice Age holy shit.

The directors already said they’re going for a "Simpsons Approach" to not age the characters and keep the status quo, basically their way of saying that this franchise will never end.

It's because of the PBR book (researched for Wreck it Ralph 1), it revolutionized CGI.

I find it funny in hindsight how everyone was hyped for this slop but it turned out to be one of Pixar’s worst films by a long shot, the trailers don’t even look that good, the film could’ve had MCU-tier writing at best.

the book first version is from 2004, not from wreck it ralph
and the disney guys werent first to try some unified shading model, it was a big race between 1999-2004 with a lot of competing solutions

either way it has nothing to do with anything, as all those studios create custom shaders anyway

Normies don’t care about the fact that Toy Story should’ve ended at 3, they just wanna see their favorite toys on screen again, this why Shrek 5 will gross lots of money, this is why Minions 3 will gross lots of money, this is why Ice Age 6 will gross lots of money…

This decade feel like if someone wished for more continuations of their favorite properties on the monkeys paw but now that’s all what people get these days while any new shit is left to dry.

Pixar is a tech company larping as an animation studio now.
Back then they rewrote toy story because you couldn't render subsurface scattering on human skin properly, these days they'd put a hundred million on R&D to figure that out first and then make a movie about a former funk singer contemplating shaving his afro to get a job and keep his house in a gentrified neighborhood and the lice living in his hair forming an unlikely alliance (they move to his balls in the post credit scene) second.

The film wasn’t amazing but it felt like Illumination actually tried for once, you can tell when they make a slop film, Sing was made cause kids love pop songs and millennials will find it "inspiring", The Secret Life of Pets was made cause Facebook moms love pet videos, a new Minions film is made cause kids love Minion shenanigans.

Migration didn’t feel like it was made to pander to a specific demographic of brainlets

Thanks for the correction anon. I could swear it was done on commission, but based on their paper from SIGGRAPH 2012 it's like your said, it's Disney's own research that others have used (like offline renderers and game engines). They don't even cite the book in their paper.

Yes, the Disney BRDF is highly preferred due to its artist-oriented flexibility compared to alternate reflection models that may be technically more physically accurate i.e. basic Cook-Torrance to the point where it's so commonplace, everyone who works with it knows where it came from so it doesn't really need to be cited

Why couldn’t Pixar just go for a more stylized look with Lightyear? The film is literally supposed to be the in-universe film that the toy was based on, the Toy Story Buzz looks nothing like the more detailed movie Buzz, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was a good attempt at making an in-universe tv show that the toy is based on but I guess that show was completely retconned out of existence.
