From what I understand from the development history of the first film, Diane was the last and most difficult to adapt from her book counterpart. They tried a variety of different designs and concepts for her personality, but nothing was sticking. It was only after casting Zazie and hearing her voice doing sample dialog for Diane that they were able to make progress.
