People have intimate knowledge of what humans look like, so if the animation of a human character is not perfect your eyes immediately recognize that something looks off. Furry characters automatically come with a small degree of separation from what human normally look like so it's not as noticeable when the animation isnt a perfect 1to1 of reality.

True, but also half-truth. Animators have been TERRIFIED animating realistic humans not necessary because it was so hard or because the audience will notice imperfections and throw popcorn at the screen. Half of the reason is the fear itself. You see, fear is more often than not illogical. And artists are more sensitive, shy, OCD, and paranoid than most people. I would know. Don't ask how I know. And so, when you animate one of them talking aminals, whether they be feral, semi-anthro, or full anthro, you know (or at least strongly believe) the audience will not care about the potential imperfection. And so, less afraid, you just animate without worry. And the end result looks fucking great. And it looks great because you animated with your feat and OCD being relatively low.

It's plausible to animate realistic humans as evident by this guy, but realistically using hand drawn animation to do realistic humans would cost way too much money and time.
Even then the guy from pic related only showed up in Rango for a few minutes, and that's despite the fact it's probably just a 3D model, or some kind of Motion-capture.

Drawing furry art is much harder than drawing humans. You can (obviously) learn the fundamentals of how to draw humans without knowing anything about drawing anthropomorphic characters, but you cannot know the fundamentals of drawing anthros without knowing how to draw convincing human anatomy. There's also a million references for drawing the human form all around you at any given moment, but knowing how to weave animal physiology and features to that human form in a way that's appealing and not "off" takes a lot more practice than most people realize.
