Genndy really could use that Craig or Paul Rudish art style for that show.
Don't get me wrong, Stephen DeStefano is a massively talented guy, but I just miss the simplicity and colors used in the UPA art style.
Idk if it was because it was cel animated or because Craig, Rob, Paul, Chris Battle were the glue that held that art style together.

Even the fact that it was "too fast" works since the show is literally called Primal and if you live an untamed life, death can come swiftly & unpredictably (though the Chieftain coming from revenge was heavily foreshadowed anyway).

I don't think they even really needed to spend more time in Mira's village. Made its point pretty quick that "no, Spear will never get used to human civilization" especially since he tried before and again returned to his animal-like instincts.

I like Genndy's rounder style with stylish 30s Fleischer-esque outlines (I'm not sure which artist should be credited for it but it makes me think of the thicker outlines in certain Popeye shorts like Clean Shaven Man)

Even if that were true, “the masses love it” isn’t an argument. It isn’t even true, look at any sort of audience rating for that episode, it’s always either last place or second to last, only above the finale. Get off Genndy's dick. He's a great animator but his writing skills are carried by the episodic nature of his work, when he needs to stretch that shit out he has no sense of pacing. He'll drag for an entire episode then when you get to the payoff he has to jam every single idea he had for it that finale.

The best material Gendy ever made are:

>Any first-run Samurai Jack with little to no dialogue
>Samurai Jack second-run episodes 1-3
>Primal S1 before Mira is introduced

He is a master of visual design, scene direction, and crafting action scenes with minimal animation yet are highly compelling because of points 1 and 2. He should play to his strengths and just put out completely stand-alone 24 minute action episodes. Samurai Jack and Primal S1 demonstrate how amazing he is at this one formula. Primal S2, Unicorn, and Fixed show how he bad he is at anything else.

If Primal never developed a story and was purely episodic, just Spear and Fang encountering new threats every week, I think it could have run for 100+ episodes and be hailed as one of the best cartoons ever. It was such a perfect dynamic. But they ruined it.

Also, I think this couldn't have worked for Samurai Jack. At some point, we want to see Jack win. We could only watch him get his hopes dashed for so long, which is why people wanted an ending. Whereas in Primal, that's just the savage world they live in (at least in S1). There is no "winning", just surviving day-to-day. The perfect setup to go forever so long as you keep coming up with ideas.
