They’re basically the same, but I think twenty years ago they had more creative limits and better input from other writers, which actually worked out in a good way. For example, the show was originally meant to be sci-fi, but luckily they dropped that idea and went with fantasy mixed with Asian cultures instead. Even so, they always stubbornly sticked with it in the next franchises.

I actually personally really like the *idea* of a pair like this because it would be a very cute platonic friendship where viewers can relax and not have to worry about anything inappropriate but I'm not sure I like it for this story. I think it would be better if the male lead was an older adult so it would have a cute father/daughter angle but making the male lead only 16-20 changes my perception of it. It's gonna be adoptive brother/sister and there's gonna be dumb teenage romance for the male lead and the little kid is gonna be a little kid.

Gay dude and little girl being bros on an adventure is something I've personally always wanted to see bc it sounds cute to me but this in particular isn't working for me. I think what I worry about is that the writers will feel the need to continually drive in that he's gay out of concerns that people *parents) will be concerned about his relationship to Pavi and that this will feel unnatural.
