I'm in Arizona, these restaurants usually appeal to snowbirds. Back when I visited San Diego with family, there used to be good Italian food, but with all the influx of Mexicans, I don't doubt it these has been faced out.

Is not really cost or availability, since I'm just over the border where I see hole in the wall restaurant with the real ingredient and a restaurant near by with cheddar and sour cream on everything.
I do understand on availability the farther you are from the border. Living in NY for a couple of years I knew I would never find a good Mexican restaurant, but did find great Italian, Chinese and Korean food. It is a trade.
