It was just bad timing unfortunately. It sucks because the movie is pretty good and you can tell DreamWorks, hell most people even, were not expecting the sequel to one of their best 2020s movies to underperform so much. The director even said back in June he already had plans for a third movie, but who knows if that's still happening.

If they do make a third one they should say fuck it and turn it into an R rated, "Bad Boys"-esque movie, and double down on the adult humor like Conker's Bad Fur Day or Drawn Together, as a fuck you to the normie audience who let the second movie flop. The director always draws Wolf smoking cigarettes so you know he's already got more mature ideas for these charaters in the back of his head.

Why would this movie be popular? Time for some truth Anthro Animals are not popular. Talking Animals like Ice Age, Bambi, Lion King, Madagascar THOSE are popular. But when you make the characters anthros that's a huge gamble because you may as well use human main characters. Examples like Zootopia and Ninja Turtles are extremely rare successes. The concept alone is divisive.

And then you have other complications like how one note the main characters are. None of these characters have depth and aren't interesting. The worst one being the farting fish.

And the final thing killing western media like Bad Guys is the political correction. The feminism shit with the female characters always being the smart and toughest ones, the men are weak and dumb. The narrative that criminals need to be excused for their careers in crime, come on aren't you tired of that shit after Steven Universe and She Ra? And there's other examples. This board is contrarian but most audiences do not like shitty main characters.

Overall Bad Guys is a shitty movie series and it deserves its shoddy box office.

I said this once and I will say it again ANTHROS or as anime calls them Beastmen aren't popular. Talking Animals ala Lion King and Bambi those are the popular ones. With anthros you may as well be using humans in the first place because the idea of humanoid bipedal animals is just....off putting. Especially if you use visually unappealing animals as your main characters. As things are I think even "failure" movies like Brother Bear perform better than Bad Guys. And the first Bad Guys had a fairly weak box office performed worse than even other Dreamworks disappointments like Monsters vs Aliens.

The only time we have seen truly phenomenon anthro media that blew out in success are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles AND Zootopia. And if you want to get generous the original Planet of the Apes movie series (not the modern films where the apes are upright ferals).

And Bad Guys suffers from the stereotypes of animal media in being infantile in its humor and unappealing such as fart jokes. And the characters have no depth, they are one note uninspired cliches. Even the characters in Amazing Digital Circus have more characterization going on in a few episodes than Bad Guys across two full movies. If your cast of characters are going to be this one note you are not going to impress audiences. And don't get me wrong static characters can work but if the writing is still juvenile trite like.....fart jokes then no dice. This is why people hated the fart joke for Kung Fu Panda 4 during the trailers.

Let me break this down in the simplest terms possible: Mr. Wolf was intentionally made to be "thirst" inducing because he's the main character, and the same is true for Diane Foxington because she's the love interest. It's movie making 101, if you want the audience to be invested in the love interest of the film, you pick a leading male and female who look like they belong together. As the storyteller it's your job to manipulate the audience's feelings without making them aware of it, and one of the most reliable ways to do that is to make your male and female lead be the most idealized looking characters in the movie and then fill the supporting cast with goofballs.

Even normies were all over the Diane Foxington and Mr. Wolf romantic overtones in the first Bad Guys movie, and that speaks to the fact that it was successful in what it was going for.

People don't seem to understand the difference between a movie that underperforms because of an unfavorable release window and/or marketing and a movie that turned off audiences because of specific story nitpicks. A movie doesn't have a soft opening because a specific scene didn't gel with audiences. If people didn't go to see it, how the hell are the going to know that action scene wasn't doing it for them? It's a stupid way to analyze the industry and I blame Youtubers for it, especially when a movie has very positive reviews from both the audience and the critics.

A movie that gets rekd because the audience hated it will either usually open strong and the drop like a rock the second week, or it be absolutely savaged by the reviews before it opens, or it just had no appeal to the audience in the first place. Great example of a movie that sank like a rock in its second week due to negative audience reception was The Last Jedi. The reviews hyped it up as the best Star Wars movie ever and we have plenty of evidence that at least half the audience despised it, and despite a massive opening weekend, its week after week drops were staggering. Then you have movies like Wrinkle in Time and Elio where the audience saw the trailers and gave them a collective "meh," and they had pitiful openings. Nobody cared what individual scenes in those movies might be weak, because they couldn't be assed to go watch them in the first place.

If your concept fails to excite the audience or you fail to get the word out and build up hype, the end result is going to be a soft or bad opening. The Bad Guys is doing better than Elio and the budget is less than 1/3 as big so it'll probably cross the profit threshold eventually, although if you ask me the place where Universal has really let the movie down is merchandising. There's barely anything for it, be it kids' toys or adult collectibles, and they aren't doing brand tie in stuff we usually see with animation tentpoles either.

If the bad guys TV series is going to be an extension of the streaming specials, I don't see myself having any interest in it. I finally saw the movie and it was really good. Lot of really cool scenes, and Kitty was a great villain that I'm glad didn't get redeemed or justified for her actions because she is a girl, but is still open to organically change due to the nature of the series and I really liked it's overall message of how perspective shapes how you grow in your environment.

Only issue I have with the movie is that the white javelin at the end is an objective downgrade from the original hopefully we can get a sequel that can tastefully rectify this.
