>inb4 we seen him as a kid.
He could have been puppeting since childhood, as his "ethics" have always been a bad joke

Etienne said all the way back in issue 3 “I’m not physically resilient. They THINK they can kill me.” I figured that meant he couldn’t BE killed; rather than simply having a contingency in place to prevent it (psychic plague).
Chances are the version of him we’ve seen throughout the series wasn’t his original body either - when he tells Valentina “This is who I am” in the first issue, I suspect he revealed to her that he was puppeting a corpse around because his original self was long gone.

Him or "Malgus," yeah. When I was re-reading #11, when he's talking to the Fucking Arseholes, he looked a lot like Dr. Doom with his Doombots.

But I don't think that's gonna be the case though. Because I think the issue with the Superpowers is that they can all take each other out without much issue. Very glass cannon.

>when he tells Valentina “This is who I am” in the first issue, I suspect he revealed to her that he was puppeting a corpse around because his original self was long gone.
That's a neat idea, that moment confused me at first since I thought I might have missed something, but later I assumed he must have done some telepathic mins meld shit or whatever where he bared his soul and let her look at his mind so she could understand he wasn't lying about his motivations. If it was him revealing that he's a psychic ghost or something instead that makes her sympathy for him make more sense, she wouldn't bother killing him if he's already dead.
him being an "omnipath" is also stressed multiple times, he's a telepath in constant contact with every human being on the entire planet, the assumption he's limited to a physical body is just that, an assumption.

Being dead would also explain the bit where Heavy mentions that Etienne admitted he hasn't cum since 1957. If he died and would need to use other people's bodies for sex that would be unethical by his standards and he wouldn't do it

also Eliza is real hot and I want to impregnate her just throwing that out here since I don't have anywhere else to talk about this comic
Anonymous No.149920981 >>149921936 >>149923087
This entire book is basically an extended essay on why telepaths suck and the X-Men are awful. Every single other Superpower can interact with the others more or less as people and without omnipresent mind reading and the threat of mind control on the table the status quo would be so much more relaxed. You'd have Eliza as goth mommy demon and Valentina as genuinely good angel and then "Jacky" as tech wizard more aligned with human governments and Heavy as separatist who wants his own atomic sex cult city-state. They don't agree on everything but neither do modern nuclear powers in 2025.

Etienne's existence is really what makes shit so perilous and even more terrifying than IRL nuclear superpowers facing off because he can't just blow up a continent like the others, he can mind control every human on the planet besides like five people and unironically believes the ethical decision for humanity is to make him immortal God-Emperor. And the fact he's constantly reading the minds of all the other superpowers means they need to act with paranoia.

The fact Etienne is growing stronger while the others remain mostly the same makes me think his psychic abilities are gestalt in nature, it's not just that he CAN contact every human on the planet, he IS the sum total of human psychic activity and the more people and more atomics there are the stronger he gets as a living hive-mind.

>you convinced me without ettiene this book would be boring AF
Oh it totally would, the same way IRL geopolitics is kind of boring despite even more countries having nuclear arsenals than there are superpowers here. This book is Kieron Gillen getting all the "TELEPATHS ARE INHERENTLY MONSTROUS" shit out of his system he couldn't do in Immortal X-Men because casual mind rape and mass manipulation is just shit the dozens of marvel telepaths do 24/7 as part of their everyday life and you're not expected to treat it seriously.

Etienne's obsession with Ethics in and of itself is kind of a meta-joke, since despite his fixation with them, he doesn't state the obvious: the ethical thing to do to would be killing someone with his powers. Charles Xavier and Jean Grey aren't any better than Etienne, the ethical thing to do is fucking blow their brains out.

Etienne agrees with you! He argues he should only stay alive to hold off someone or something potentially worse than him. Granted, he couldn’t do jack shit against the Queen when she showed up, so maybe that argument is flawed. Val still kept him alive afterwards, but I imagine that’s just because they’re friends at that point and she knows if he crosses a line she can easily take him out.

Valentina is a LITERAL Angel, and has been so demonstrably good and pure-hearted that for the last 60 years, the entire Superpower Detente is based around everyone trusting the fact she doesn't lie and genuinely is an angel sent from heaven to protect the world, so she can be relied on to mediate conflicts, verify stuff like Magus's power estimates, etc.
None of that applies to Etienne. He says "Our existence is fundamentally immoral" when REALLY it's "MY existence is fundamentally immoral."

Valentina is such a sweetheart that when she got fucking nuked and everyone around her died while she was completely fine, she went to live in space instead so nobody would be hurt if they tried again. Magus was right(RIP), they ARE nothing like each other.

I feel like it's going to be revealed that she somehow knows Etienne has been pretending to be the voice of God. I don't know how that could work without Etienne being aware of it, maybe some fucky nonlinear Hell time stuff, but it just feels like using the reveal for a crisis of faith would be too obvious a path for Gillen to take.
Anonymous No.149927157 >>149930123

actually I bet Etienne is the one who told Eliza how to sell your soul in the first place. Either directly through mental suggestion or by mind controlling someone else into telling her.
Jacky is pissed when he finds out she did it, and Dev specifically only gave her a vague high level overview of what it is. Jacky's entire lesson is "Demonology and why it's TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT" since you're getting infinite suffering for finite gain and is why no human being in history had ever actually gone to hell before Eliza, it wasn't possible until recently and even once it was 100% of people with the knowledge considered it useless. When Dev comes back pretending to be Jacky, he says somebody must have told her, and Etienne is remarkably nonchalant about the deal, considering it "utilitarianism 101, one life for the world."

Etienne saying "Oh, well, you need a concept of time to understand torture, so something existed outside temporality can't be that bad" seems like it's him rationalizing his decision to damn Eliza further, he's surprised when Dev is about to fucking throttle him

It's in the OP, it's The Power Fantasy by Kieron Gillen. It's basically "what if all the omega level wank from Immortal X-Men (which he was writer of) was taken seriously and explored in depth, with a small number of Superpowers capable of destroying the world navigating a detente where they try to avoid destroying the world.

It's a bit of a desperation move since Dev-pretending-to-be-Jacky knows Etienne is growing more powerful as time goes on, and since he had to reveal he's not actually a Superpower to stop Eliza killing him, it's a ticking clock from that point since Etienne will read her mind and know.
Etienne, in typical asshole telepath fashion, significantly downplayed the extent of his already frightening abilities. Everyone thought his body was fragile but if he died everyone in range would die of a psychic contagion or death throes wiping out continents.

As far as killing him unprovoked that's honestly not that big an issue. Eliza is obviously okay with it, Jacky is really Dev who's her husband, Etienne threatened to murder Heavy 's entire family and his child just a while ago, Etienne revealed he could possibly control Heavy's son who's the 7th Superpower making everyone anxious, and Valentina is anti murder but she herself has considered killing Etienne and won't destroy the world to avenge him.

IF he was dead it would actually be a pretty clean resolution and most of the survivors could get along (especially since Valentina and Eliza aren't very ambitious to begin with).......but Etienne surviving means the whole things gonna be a shit show since he can reveal Jacky Magus has been dead since The Queen, which means Heavy might try to kill him before he can build back up the Pyramid as revenge for the "leaked" laser satellite

>As far as killing him unprovoked that's honestly not that big an issue.

On it's own I think I'd agree, but I think the combo of heavy generally being a bit of a hothead + Magnus working for the USA (the people who bisected his ass a shortish time ago) + Magnus going all "Dude trust me it's totally good." does give me some doubts.

I don't remember Matsumi and how she feels so feel free to call my bullshit out, but I think she's generally chill with him + her emotions running high with an already tense situation might fuck things up anymore.

If you are the OP thanks on making this thread btw I never get to talk about this comic.

I think this almost has to be the case - this couldn't have been an impromptu body hop, since the psychic shield would've stopped that as well, meaning that he's had this replacement ready to go for ages. Either he's implanted a psychic seed in their minds set to activate if its connection to his current host body were ever to be severed, or he's been inhabiting multiple bodies simultaneously all along. The lean towards the second option - it feels like something someone who's regulated their own emotions and sensations like he has would do without caring about the dissonance, and it's safer since there'd be no psychic 'connections' to the primary host body that Magus could possibly track. Valentina could too, but it seems pretty clear now that he told her about this way back in issue 1 so her finding out wouldn't be a risk regardless.

The one downside to this would be that the other host bodies wouldn't be privy to all of his memories - he'd need to 'update' them periodically. With how many people he's interfacing with all the time, Magus wouldn't find that suspicious. But what about now? His host body died moments after learning about Kid Ignition's exact resiliences and vulnerabilities, so does his new host body know about this yet? Or did that information get lost?
