Because it's a fairly uncrowded niche desperate for new blood? If you can keep a consistent output, you can go surprisingly far without wholly relying on online algorithms to boost you.

Again, newspapers provide consistency. With the internet at large imploding on itself, it's crucial to have a form of media that isn't relying on shopping mall type infrastructure.

The Macanudo guy won best Newspaper Strip. Interesting choice. I think artwise he's quite good. Art Spiegelmann won a lifetime achievement award.
The actual Reuben Award, the big one, was won by the Off the Mark Guy. Though I think Will Henry, creator of Wallace the Brave, should have won.

Outside of the obligatory "nostalgia" type answers, it serves as a low-key literary and visual-art stimulant. Ultimately, they're neither complex enough to be made into an animated series nor plot- concentrated enough to be made into a comic book; most of these are made as episodic, just snippets to captivate the audience without subjecting too much boredom.
