Hey you want some more Avatar MTG news?

Avatar prerelease numbers are kicking the shit out of the Spiderman prerelease numbers in popularity and demand. The products are selling for way more on TCGplayer than the Spider-Man products even with the rumors circulating that the licensing deal with Disney fell through and so Spider-Man will only have one print run. That FOMO ain't doing shit, no one cares about Spider-Man. Everyone just wants more Avatar. And the Avatar set hasn't even been fully spoiled, these people don't even know what they're buying and they're still buying it in droves.

This shouldn't surprise people, because anime (which many consider Avatar to be despite its western origin) is more popular than western capeshit.

People are surprised though because Spider-Man is considered by many to be 'mainstream' and Avatar is seen as niche.

Have a Toph.

And here's all the spoiled cards so far if you missed previous threads but are still curious

>Still lower than the final fantasy set
well yeah, nothing can hold a candle to Final Fantasy in terms of brand strength. Apparently Final Fantasy made WotC more money in one day than their Lord of the Rings set made in several months. Lord of the fucking Rings. That's a once in a blue moon kind of thing though, everybody knows nothing will ever top Final Fantasy and no one has any illusions about trying.

My big worry is that, following this logic, they'll just start making more Final Fantasy mtg sets.

No I get it, but I think the bigger issue is oversaturating the market. They should be doing these gimmick sets once or twice a year instead of dumping them all at once. They'd have a higher revenue turnout. Same could be said about Pokemon sets

They usually talk about their crossovers years in advance. The only crossover we had gotten news that was supposed to be a multi set thing was the Marvel stuff. Spider-Man and general Marvel stuff. If they do decide to do more Final Fantasy we probably won't be seeing it for several years. I'm more curious as to what's going to happen with the Marvel sets that were supposed to be coming considering the rumors of rumors going around. Don't think any of those one set rumors had a real source but the news has spread around a lot.

The important characters are getting multiple cards to represent their different points in the story. Katara's cards are a pure blue for the start of the series, blue/white for book 2 when she's learned healing, and blue/white/green for book 3 when because idk I'm sure their internal logic makes sense for it

We've got a red zuko for book 1, we've seen art for book 2 zuko but don't know the card yet, and book 3 zuko is red/white/black

Blind Bandit toph here is pure green, and Metalbender toph which comes later in the series is green/red/white. Maybe there'll be a two color toph in the middle somewhere. All of this can be seen in the OP link

I hope we at least get a Gruul Toph. As far as I understand the supposed reasoning was supposed to be following the character's journey over the course of the seasons of the show. So characters that were introduced in book one would have multiple while characters introduced later could have less and less.

Just rumors and whispers from insiders, no checkable source or hard confirmation. It would make sense though, Disney being Disney would surely want a bazillion dollars for licensing any of their properties, especially Marvel of all things, while other properties like FF and Avatar were probably dirt cheap to acquire. I imagine Disney was trying to charge WotC too many arms and legs compared to the deals WotC was getting elsewhere, and considering nothing Disney can possibly offer would outperform FF, it wouldn't make sense to pay more would it?

That's just my line of logic
Anonymous No.149924857 >>149924986

Yeah but all their demands for money would have happened years ago when the deal was first being hashed out. By the time the cards and bundles would be hitting the print factories things would have been discussed and all legal agreements would have already happened years ago. The idea that things would go under the month before the cards are about to hit shelves is insane sounding. It's just moving way way too fast for legal things. You get me? It doesn't make any sense for this all to just go under so fast. Unless something happened that changed things and it was big enough that Disney or Wizards demanded immediate change even if that would go against their previously agreed on contracts and whatever fines and repercussions that would come with going against it. But it just doesn't make much sense. If things were this rocky between them we'd have heard about it the whole year after the initial rumors came out and it wouldn't have made sense for Marvel sets to be a multi year thing if things were under already.

Well here's what we know. Disney gave them a license to print X number of Spider-Man cards on paper (but nothing digital). Why wouldn't WotC be printing Spider-Man on their digital platforms? The only reason can be Disney wanted too much money for that. You can extrapolate this to assume Disney would have also wanted too much money to license 4 or 5 print runs of these cards, so WotC only paid them for one, decided to wait a bit to see how much money it looked like that woud make, then decide if further licensing was worth while.

This would be the pragmatic thing for WotC to do, and the lack of Spider-Man on Arena or MTGO supports the idea that WotC paid for as little licensing as possible up front. So likely the agreement was for one print one, with the option to pay Disney more for more print runs if deemed that was the way to go. And it probably was not deemed the way to go.

>You can extrapolate this to assume Disney would have also wanted too much money to license 4 or 5 print runs
I don't think you really can. They've said before they can reprint these sets and precons before and have even done so sporadically since their releases. Online likeness I can see being a whole separate licensing thing with how hyper focused licensing deals can go. Like the difference between six inch figures and seven. Disney demanding Wizard's pay for each printing just doesn't make as much sense. Doesn't make any sense really. That's price Wizard's takes themselves in the factories and doesn't actually cost Disney anything.
Anonymous No.149925157 >>149925191

Well Disney plays by different rules than everyone else when it comes to their IP. I think that's just common knowledge by now.

We're getting FF and Avatar on digital platforms because those companies just said "yeah sure, give us a bag of money and you can print as many little cardboard pictures as you want, digital, paper, we don't care" but Disney, oh no, they wouldn't do that, you know they wouldn't do that. You're going to pay for every drop of ink, every pixel, they're going to count them.
Anonymous No.149925191
>>149925157
That still doesn't sound right but I guess there's no real telling what the fuck is going on behind the scenes. In a sense, I'm surprise Disney even allowed Magic to print Marvel cards when Disney had their own cardgame going on the whole time. Could have been seen as a conflict of interest but an opportunity too good to pass up.
