So I watched a YouTube video essay and they said that we're at a low point for indie animation because episode 1 of the gaslight district made no sense because the characters are stupid and made poor decisions and there was a fly eating poop in the first scene.

Cutting out the irony, is it just me or these "indie animation community" reviewers the most petty people out there even for /co/ standards?
I don't think stuff like Monkey Wrench is a fucking masterpiece or anything, but I've seem people treating Zeurel like the antichrist for doing basically everything i would expect from a indie project. No higher ups interference, humor that orbitates from cringe to insane, crazy worldbuildung, crazy action where characters fight each other while the animators fight the budget. If it got single season on Cartoon Network near midnight people would call it underrated for ages, but these kids treat it like it is a OFFENSE to the high image of types like Hazbin Hotel and the Amazing Circus
Are these the kids who grew up with Steven Universe and want every show to be a half assed soap opera? Are these the people who still discuss the morality of the Gravity Falls characters can't remember a single joke?

Industry shows and Indie shows are held to different standards
One is explicitly a commisioned product that is requested at the behest of an studio as part of a block or schedule. The other is a passion project from a single creator or small team.
Thus there's this sense of expectations that we come to see from each of them, thus, whenever a show tries doing something different is either praised or disliked from not sticking to said pre-existing stardard, regardless of the actual quality.

Thus we often see mediocre CN or Nick shows be revalued as "underrated" because they did something that wasn't "expected" from industry standards, even when it was CN's and Nick's themselves who approved or made the decision.

The heaven, hell and limbo set up and world-building feels more well thought out and interesting. The change in scenery, the stark contrast like how Heaven feels more cosmic horror/mythological horror instead of a place of good and the idea that these worlds secretly and indirectly rely on each other to co-exist instead of "us-ville and othertown" placeholders is interesting.

Gaslight District's issue is that it immediately wants to be some deep lore show while also being heavily derivative of Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss, just with the word "demon" crossed out and replaced with "undead".

Checks out. Gaslight District tries too much to cram in so much lore into one episode, but the world-building feels more interesting that the typical "heaven bad, hell good", setting, since it's moreso that heaven's plans are more cryptic than whatever is going on down in Hell, and both places still feel like a nightmare to live in.

Eeeeeeeehhhhhhhh, maybe, maybe not.
They do have some surface level similarites, but the artistic aesthetic is sufficiently different to where if the art of HH/HB is not to your taste, GD might be more up your ally. The humor is the same sort of stuff Gltich is known for, which is at least less swear dependent than Vivzie's shows. Plus, GD is only focusing on 4 characters generally, and 2 specifically, though this is also only the pilot, so that may change.
Bit of a non answer, but, we're going to have to wait until some more episodes come out before we go comparing the shows.

If you took the top rated Indie series and made showcase program out of them, maybe you would get something good.

TV channels used to have experimental showcases and if you ran it on some M-rated after hours show, on some government channel in those countries which have them. Then the lack of viewers wouldn’t matter and the creators would get paid.

More importantly, Mel's hot in a gross way, so I hope the show succeeds. The pilot goes through too much stuff too quickly, but they can space it out in the next episodes.

I think pilot was kinda fine, for the designated in mind viewer this show is ok. Main problem was pacing, and that author same as vivzie, fearing it's his only chance to shine and show, made too much. There are mysteries, lost paradise, conflicting characters, father and daughter dilemma and very fast action sequences just in one episode which is a lot. I have better hope for future, and that they'll take their time to build up everything, instead of rush.
Just not my personal taste, I dislike all gross out just for sake of gross out and overall thing that, the character designs etc
