Don Bluth animation style used to scare the living hell out of me. Especially the villains, they actually looked evil and grotesque. The themes and stories were also overall, very mature. I miss his style and I wish I could have experienced it more of it as an adult

Been meaning to say but anyone else hate Fievel's father? Keep in mind that he has a full grey beard and all his children are pre-teens. So he comes across as some old man creep because he impregnated his wife when he was already old. I just don't like old men impregnating young women. And I also hate Fievel's father being so idiotic because cats do exist in the American continent. Even kids watching the movie would think Fievel's father is an idiot because where would he get the idea that cats don't exist in America? Makes no sense that a mouse character is that foolish.

Fieval’s father seems like a really fun optimistic and jovial guy to be around and also a good husband and father trying to do the best he can for his family.

Who gives a fuck if he’s old? He’s been living a hard life in Russia trying not to get pogrommed to death, that ages a guy faster. And his wife doesnt seem any younger than him. I don’t know where you got the idea he’s married to a younger woman, did you confuse his daughter for his wife? Maybe they’ve got adult kids who already moved out of the house and these are just their most recent children, maybe they had more kids who died. That’s not your business. What kind of weirdo goes around saying a happily married man shouldn’t have consensual sex with his own wife?

And yeah, he made a mistake, buying that propaganda that there were no cats in america. It’s not like he had internet to go look it up on, he was following a rumor that turned out not to be true. America was still probably a better option in the long run for his family than staying in Russia.

How do mice in New York even know about Sheriff Burp in the first place? It’s not like he’s from a comic book (or pulp novel in this era) and I doubt low-middle class families had the income to get California newspapers imported all the way to the other side of the country.

There’s still people who exchange mail or get visits from people out west. It took a little longer for travel back then, but it wasn’t like a dark age where travel and communication were cut off. Plenty of time for urban legends or celebrity gossip to make its way across the continent. And yes, that stuff did get published in magazines and the like, even if it wasn’t local.

In the real 19th century/turn of the 20th century, real New Yorkers knew about people like the real Wyatt Earp.

This is an image of the Boston Daily Globe posting an article about Earp on their front page in 1896.

New York City no doubt had similar papers posting similar articles, but this was one of the clearer ones I could find from Google that weren’t just his obit, and I don’t feel like digging all that deep today. My point is: national and even global news was still a thing back then. Street urchins like Fieval could dig week old discarded papers like this out of the literal garbage and read them, provided somebody in their friend group was literate.

I always thought the sequel was way too short but looking it up, it wasn't that different from most animated films around that time. Still feels like it's a bit too fast moving

Maybe it could have done more with the cats living in peace with mice thing, fievel's sister convincing a bunch of the cats to give up eating mice and the film ending with her and the girl cat doing a number together to an audience of cats and mice.

Anonymous No.149938003

I mean, that, but also because Bluth was self-aware of how his work ate at the time he had for his family, and he channeled part of that regret into the film.
