Because "it would stop being a superhero story and start resembling a sci-fi story".

That being said, I think you could have superheroes change the world into a post-scarcity one as long as the plot revolves around antagonists fighting against superheroes to prevent them from doing so.

He kinda is. He has a lot more in common with Batman than people want to admit. Superman can solve mysteries and play scientist even better than Batman, but it's not really his primary thing. Clark's the Valedictorian Jock who tackles lots of extra-cirriculars. Bruce is the resident emo boy and drama geek who holds the engineering and chess clubs on his shoulders.

Silver Age Superman was those things. Once in a blue moon, someone like Grant Morrison will reference this as with the curing cancer page in All Star and for the Lois' surgery during Grant's Nu52 Action Comics run, but by and large, Superman for the past twenty to forty years has been "I punch good" or "America's Dad/Real Bio Dad" or "Moral Conscious of the JLA."

Because in DC cancer is the result of a semi-sentient universal force of decay that's perpetually at war with the three colors that make up life, and it's more of a Swamp Thing villain, so It'd be rude for Superman to go around poaching other heroes' rogues.

Because the DC universe is powered by Crisis energy, and is dependent on it to exist, so any solution to any universal problem will eventually fail, or generate a new problem to take it's place, either through the natural laws of equal and opposite reaction, or the direct intervention of the higher powers in charge of maintaining the universe.

That's the beauty of Comic Book Science, anon.
