I think they're going way too hard on the Hopeman stuff. It's okay to have Superman do things besides be a motivational poster.

that's more or less what happens in the new movie though. he's your regular Superman who's been around for 3 years before he has to face an existential dilemma, gets captured by the government and then Lex Luthor, tries his best despite being on the brink of death and asks for his friends' help all while grappling with his own self-doubt and morality.
