That first Despicable Me was back when Illumination still had to prove itself, and it shows that they actually tried to meet the other mainstream animation studios at their level. I'd say that resulted in a pretty charming film with plenty of rewatch value.
Megamind, though, is in another league. It does subversion right; pokes fun at familiar tropes but still uses narrative twists to make for a compelling character study. It's also just funnier overall and I appreciate that it skews older with its relatively mature cast of characters. I hate that the original writers were responsible for that direct-to-streaming continuation, but I'll always commend them for that first film that honestly didn't need a follow-up, especially not 14 years later.
