Interestingly enough there was an entire script written after rise of the beasts premiered that was like an entirely different movie from what we're getting now. It featured hound is the main protagonist and had like 14 Autobots in there along with like 20 decepticons. It was by a first-time writer and came in at about 3 hours. It was like Independence Day on crack.

Mold reuse is good for toy companies, but less wanted for media which emphasizes different silhouettes for characters more and more these days.
The 84/85 G1 guys are full of red and white cars and similar features. This is why they so often get paired down or tweaked for adaptations these days. Animated made Prowl a black bike instead of another white car, movies made Ironhide black, you generally don't see Prowl, Wheeljack, and Jazz in the same series outside of comics, and so on.
