Is this truly the greatest Spider-Man comic of all time?

It's one of them. I kinda think the origin though is his greatest story of all time. I'm kinda baiting as I am not entirely sure but I want this to also be discussed alongside our favorite stories and aspects of Spider-Man.
Show that origin story to a kid or an adult or teen who somehow never heard of Spider-Man before and you'll see them react and question morality while also being presented with interesting artwork and easily understood and elegant storytelling.
The accessibility and the broad moral questions it raises are not the only aspects to the appeal. I think that the emotions and range of Peter is explored through most of the story and the only thing missing from it is a true villain and the public hatred of Spider-Man conveyed through Jonah, everything else is there.
If This Be My Destiny is prettier, is part of an arc where Peter is hounded by a lot of people and the public, and is dealing with Aunt May dying. But it reaffirms the origin only rather than iterating on it. Same with Spider-Man No More.
KLH brings in more cerebral aspects that also question Peter's psyche by now showing how MJ is in danger putting extra pressure on him and the conflict he has with his desire to simply kill Vermin and Kraven in the form of the spider.
So yeah KLH I think is tied with the origin in my desire to read it over or in my appreciation. Night Gwen Stacy Died is a close second. Child Within and Issue 200 of Spec are also pretty close.

If Spider-Man had never gone to series, if Marvel had never gone into the superhero business, if that origin story in Amazing Fantasy #15 was all we ever had -- it would still be a classic. A lonely little nerd is blessed with superpowers and his very first instinct is to get rich and famous, until fate comes back round to haunt him. It's this great, quietly subversive take on the superhero narrative where the tragedy is entirely of his own selfish making. And all that in less than a dozen pages.

Salicrup was the last great Spider-Man editor and he continued to oversee a lot of good Spider-Man books after Kraven's Last Hunt. Though if you stop after he left, you miss out on JMD's great Spectacular run. Just give it a break after Spectacular Spider-Man #200. Everything goes downhill for a long time with Maximum Carnage.

I actually think KLH was in a way a response to those comics, since Kraven has this warped idea of what spider-man is, of wanting to be the "Spider", while peter sticks to his humanity and refuses to hurt vermin. It's not a subversion of spider-man in any way, and rejects that idea
Anonymous No.149956961 [Report] >>149987620

>I actually think KLH was in a way a response to those comics
This story has an odd genesis, with DeMatteis having previously conceived two earlier versions of the story with different hero/villain pairings. The original idea was a Wonderman vs Grim Reaper story, then a Batman vs Joker story before it became Spider-Man vs Kraven.

The original idea was probably rejected because Wonderman just wasn't a popular enough character, but that idea would have to pre-date the Grim Reaper's death in 1985, so the basic story idea DeMatteis had would have predated the publication of Watchmen and DKR.

He did later write a different version of the Batman/Joker storyline until the title "Going Sane".

I need to check out Wonderman and who he is by reading Avengers comics. Seems like a based guy even if he gets sucked off by evil Wanda and screams like Keanu. Wonderman being an actor superhero seems like a great premise for a miniseries or him having a more prominent arc solely about him in a team book. Not sure if that has happened. I just know about Grim Reaper, Vision, Beast being his friend, him being a former villain as a rich kid being tricked into villainy, and that's about it.

The "or because" is implying MJ came here because she is scared right? Or to confide in Robbie and finally talk to him regarding Peter's identity? Because by this point MJ and Robbie both kinda know that each other know Peter's identity. I do like how this is included but it does make me want MJ and Robbie to actually become close friends due to this type of shared experience they have. Kinda wish Ultimate also had Robbie to tag along with Ben and JJJ.

Wonderman was fine when he stayed in his lane as a C-tier Avenger who was basically Beast's sidekick, but he sucked when Marvel broke up Wanda and Vision and tried to push him as Wanda's new love interest. He was basically the Paul of Avengers, nobody wanted it but they kept on doing it again and again.

BTW, they fixed the art on that issue you're referring to, to make it clear it wasn't a BJ, and he was being tortured instead, but people keep pretending it was.

Wonderman's 90s solo book put the most focus on him being a superhero trying to make it in Hollywood, but Marvel can't or won't reprint the series since the writer did time in prison.

Looking at stories like KLH, it's obvious how it would never translate to film unless they were willing to commit to having Kraven undergo an arc over the course of multiple movies before he snaps and gets his grand finale. The storyline works in large part because of how the character had been treated prior to this breaking point.
Anonymous No.149993788 [Report]
>>149993577
I could conceive of a 2 film or even 1 film solution. For 2 films just have Kraven start out as a famous TV/internet hunter like Ultimate or as a rich aristocrat. He gets humbled by Spidey and it ruins his life afterwards. The first film can have this in the background after they meet at the beginning and the end has the main villain and Kraven fighting Spidey. The next film would then be a mix of KLH and some other storyline with a similar tone and theming. I always thought Death of Jean DeWolff or Sin-Eater at least showing up is a good companion to KLH. That or a brand new storyline that also involves Chameleon or something.
Or the ideal would just be a shorter 1 hour or 1 hour 20 mins movie that is a just a straight up animated adaptation of KLH which is the best option imo. Either situation could possibly fit the 1 film solution with a short sequence added at the beginning as a flashback or a scene with JJJ or Robbie or Spidey explaining who Kraven was to a reporter after KLH ends and Kraven is already dead.

I wouldn't call Ditko's material overrated. He created the character and defined what constitutes a good Spider-Man story, his Peter Parker was also quite radical. Today most people imagine Peter as the meek nerd, but Ditko's Peter had tremendous charisma and bite, he wouldn't tolerate shit from anyone.

What I love the most of If this is my destiny is Spidey realizing he is the only one that can do this. Ditko's Heroes are men that were always above others, like Conan The Barbarian, the moment they jump into the world, they change the world forever.

Well what can you expect from Zeck himself? Though he is getting older and those pieces from a while ago.
Anyway, I can't storytime stuff right now but for any anons who want more, read Soul of the Hunter as it is the most substantial companion piece alongside Kraven's Lost Hunt, The Child Within, Spec 200, JMD's Spec run in general, Death of Vermin, Spencer's Hunted if you want modern Kraven stuff that addresses dumbass stuff and brings current comics to some semblance of what it was, and Sensational Spider-Man annual 1 I think which is Kraven's First Hunt. A retelling of his first appearance with a different context. Kinda like a fanservice-y prequel to KLH that a future adaptation could use to hint at this future arc.

I forgot to also say but Wonder Man just being an actor that MJ has to act with could be interesting. Dunno if MJ would like him or not but him being there with MJ while Peter can worry about other stuff is an interesting dynamic. Him being a Paul equivalent except he's not into MJ, only as friends but Peter not knowing that would be interesting. But he probably had some heat back then from already messing with Wanda and Viz so I guess it wouldn't work fully.
