I don't think it's much of a matter of being prudish or not (although you are right), I think the premise is just not that appealing to most people.

I can see it being considered a good movie for the people who really like that sort of gross humor, but I don't think people at any point in time would eagerly flock to watch a movie like this.

It's a strange idea to invest so much time and money on a project that you know won't be super well received. If it was made as a passion indie side-project it'd make sense, but expecting it to be super popular with the general is a bit of a stretch.

When it comes to long animated movies, I think the general public wants to see a handful of things:
>cool story filled with solid action scenes
>deep, emotional story
>funny, not-too-graphic story
>wholesome/inspiring/touching story

each of those paired with good animation and an appropriate and appealing visual style, of course.

The problem with movies like Sausage Party or Fixed and others is that it is inherently kind of a niche thing; it's not a movie for families, it's not a movie for couples, it's not a movie for most standard group of friends, it's mostly a movie one with a certain type of humor would watch in his lonesome, or maybe in the rare group that does enjoy that kind of humor, and is not embarrassed to admit it and watch it with others.
