Even when Venom was in villain mode he was a ham.

He was definitely always more threatening than the movie one though, and this is mainly because whether villain or anti-hero, Eddie Brock himself was something of a bloodthirsty psycho, while the symbiote was just like the devil on his shoulder. In the movies, Brock is a reluctant everyman and they gave the whole "venom persona" to the symbiote instead of both, and the symbiote itself only wants to kill to feed or to LARP as a hero
