The only Chick Tracts comic I ever read was that one about Communist revolution, and it was surprisingly OK given the subject matter. It obviously wasn't fair-handed, but it was not much more OPINIONS than those phoned in screeds that show up warning kids not to do drugs or whatever.

A fundie relative of mine gave me a bunch of these when I was like 5-6 years old and they legit traumatized me. One of the most fucked up things you can do to a child is tell him that an omnipotent psychopath will torture him for eternity if he doesn't follow his arbitrary, contradictory and nonsensical rules to the letter.

I think they must have been a lot less deranged in the past, because my dad used to hand them out and i'd read some and they seemed fine. art was a lil melodramatic, but the messages were just regular christianity.

Not everyone believes the Bible word for what some people don't believe in the afterlife some people believe your behavior determines if you go to heaven or hell more so than your religion.

It does and it doesn't. I agree there are no explicit descriptions of Hell, but the general implication is that "Hell" is a second death. Or a second permanent death occurs at some point, possibly Last Judgement.
What sucks about afterlife theology is fanfic interpretations have clouded the entire discussion, like there are people who believe in Dante's Inferno tier descriptions.

It's funny, I used to get shit for obsessing over fiction, but it really gives you the framework to understand religion and different sects. people stumble and get so confused about it all "is Joe worshipping the same god as Hamud?" which is looking at it backwards.
but fiction has ingrained all of these useful concepts. Canon, fanfiction, sequels, prequels, retcons, unauthorized sequels without the original authors, etc. The true faith is like Sonic 3 & Knuckles. You can try to play either one on its own, but you're meant to use lock-on technology to get the full story. And yeah the music changes sometimes, but that's a human mistake.

I don't think so. Zoroastrianism started in the 6th century BC. The same century when 2nd temple was built.

I'm Catholic and when I was younger Chick Tracts bothered me a lot because Chick fucking HATES Catholics, like actively despises them.

But funnily, the older I've gotten, and the more I've become invested in the Catholic Faith, the more I've, strangely, come to see him as more right than he knew. As I've become invested in history, philosophy, and theology, I've come to believe that there really is basically an unbreachable spiritual divide between the United States and the Catholic Church. That there's something at the beating heart of what makes America what it is that will never be compatible with Catholicism. That really you can't actually be both a Good American and a Good Catholic.

So, in a weird way, I kind of appreciate Jack Chick these days, because when he makes all these comics going "the Catholics are BAD for America," I think he was more right than he knew.

Perhaps, I give some insight on that question.

I had history professor who asked which religious group was more prone to suicides. Jews, Catholics, or Protestants. The answer was Protestants. Catholics and Jews were less prone to suicides. Part of it was that when life becomes shit for Catholics and Jews, they have a community to support them. Protestants with their emphasis on individualism tend to tough it out alone with various results. Of course this very general and there other things that do factor in.
