Yes. This movie clearly didnt have the right writers who were capable of making a sensitive topic. It only came across as half assed and just weird. Also trying to target strictly a female demographic instead of just the normal family audience is just a very dumb decision.

It's not necessarily a bad thing if they want it to cover multiple topics. But it did not work here.
It's already a red panda, which perfectly ties into the idea of anger issues being explored via a monster that doubles to showcase an internal struggle. It being solely about controlling your temper is good enough on it's own. Plus, the puberty metaphor creates some unintentionally creepy implications. Especially with Mei casually showing off her Panda parts at the end of the Movie.
